Key stakeholders and registrars from Nigerian Universities have come together with a united goal of improving the administrative infrastructure of their institutions. Through collaboration and shared vision, they aim to raise the standards of governance within their esteemed universities. The Association of Registrars of Nigerian Universities (ARNU) collaborated with the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) to coordinate a seminar for university registrars in Nigeria. The theme of the recent 75th business meeting and second Registrar’s workshop was focused on the importance of a sustainable legal framework in promoting industrial harmony within the Nigerian Universities System.

The event discussed various challenges and possible remedies to improve the current situation. ARNU is an association responsible for uniting Registrars from various universities in Nigeria, including those from Federal, State, and Private universities. This gathering aims to promote collaboration and excellence while also providing a platform for professional development and discussion on the modern challenges of university management in the 21st century. On April 24, 2024, in Abuja, at the end of the event, Professor Olufemi Peters, the Vice Chancellor of NOUN, addressed the gathering.

In his statement, he urged all attendees to take advantage of the opportunities offered by NOUN to expand their knowledge. Professor Isaac Butswat, standing in for the vice Chancellor, emphasized the crucial role Registrars play in all aspects of an institution. From training to recruitment, Registrars are responsible for issuing appointment letters, promotion letters, dismissal letters, admission letters, suspension letters, and more. This showcases the extensive and vital responsibilities entrusted to Registrars within the organization.

Also, the vice Chancellor instructed the Registrars to always approach their tasks with a sense of reverence and responsibility, emphasizing the importance of their role in maintaining peace and stability within the University system. During his keynote address, Professor Dakas C.J. Dakas, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), highlighted the critical significance of university registrars in fostering cohesion and cooperation among staff and faculty members. He emphasized the crucial role of Registrars in maintaining academic integrity.

He noted that they are the ones responsible for sending out admission letters and fulfilling various other duties within universities. He stressed the importance of developing the skills and abilities of the youth within their jurisdiction. It is essential that they are ready to take on the role of mentors. Their responsibility is to guide and support the next generation as they prepare to step into positions as University administrators. A crucial duty that leaders must fulfill is establishing a solid plan for succession.

In addition, Chris Maiyaka, the Acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), praised the Vice-Chancellor of NOUN for agreeing to host the prestigious event, creating an opportunity for meaningful dialogue and valuable perspectives. John Mairafi Ahmadu, speaking on behalf of Maiyaka through the director of the executive secretary’s office, expressed that the theme is highly relevant to the present requirements of the academic institutions.

He stated that the National Universities Commission remains committed to working together with ARNU to strengthen the Nigerian University System and increase its competitiveness on a global scale. They will face the obstacles ahead and capitalize on the opportunities that come their way.
