Modular and Artisanal refineries in Nigeria are considered illegal operations.

Arise News gives us a report on how refinery operators are conducting business without interception from security forces.

At the meeting of stakeholders to address Artisanal and Illegal refineries, there’s a call to legalize the practice of modular refining in the Niger Delta in order to end oil theft. This would create legitimate job opportunities in the region and help to reduce the rampant crime associated with oil theft, it would provide an avenue for legal refining and sale of crude oil. While this may seem like a drastic measure, it is something that needs to be considered in light of the significant losses Nigeria experiences as a result of oil theft. This would also allow the practice to be more tightly regulated.
