Over 200 workers will lose their jobs due to Microsoft's closure nationwide.

There are signs suggesting that Microsoft, a major player in the tech industry, is considering closing down the West Africa branch of the African Development Centre (ADC) in Lagos, Nigeria. This branch is part of their $100 million investment in Africa. Recent reports indicate that the company’s management has already informed employees about the unexpected changes. It has been disclosed that the impacted employees have been assured of receiving their salaries through June 2024. However, In 2022, it introduced its inaugural ADC in Kenya and Nigeria to strengthen its African position

By establishing two primary locations in Nairobi, Kenya, and Lagos, Nigeria, the company aims to promote a top-tier engineering hub where talented Africans can develop cutting-edge solutions with local and global influence. This latest development impacts only the Nigerian office in Lagos. Within the Lagos office, various teams in product engineering, ecosystem development, and innovation resided. The Microsoft Garage, a recently established entity aimed at improving innovation within the tech ecosystem, was also located within the office space.

Graduates can utilise ADC for various technology opportunities.

Also, as of 2022, the ADC had a team of 120 engineers at its launch, which eventually grew to over 200 employees. Gafar Lawal, the Managing Director of ADC West Africa, stated that the facility is dedicated to nurturing, preparing, and recruiting engineering professionals in the country and the broader West Africa region. This endeavour aims to support the creation of organisation products that reach over 1 billion devices and enable millions of users and organisations worldwide to increase their productivity.

During that period, Cynthia Wasonga, a software engineer for the organisation, observed the potential impact the company’s expansion into Africa would have on college students and recent graduates. Local universities are collaborating with them to develop a specialised curriculum focused on Africa’s modern intelligent edge and cloud. Graduates can utilise the ADC for opportunities in data science, AI, mixed reality, application development, and other fields, leading to a purposeful career. While the specific cause of the closure is unclear, a few technology specialists and insiders in the industry believe that the nation’s economic difficulties could have influenced the decision.

Advanced technological innovations were promoted by the organisation.

Recent reports have revealed that they have yet to address the rumours surrounding the potential closure of its office in Lagos. They will continue expanding its cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) services in Malaysia with a $2.2 billion investment over the next four years. This move is part of the company’s strategy to promote its generative AI technology across Asia. Its record-breaking investment in Malaysia, its largest in 32 years, will allow more than 200,000 people to explore the possibilities of AI cloud technology, benefiting the nation’s developers.

However, the organisation’s impact in the country and Africa has significantly promoted digital literacy, supported entrepreneurship, and advanced technological innovation. Through initiatives such as the Microsoft 4Afrika program, the company has worked to bridge the digital divide by providing access to affordable technology, training programs, and resources for individuals and businesses in the region. Their investments in cloud computing, AI, and data analytics have also helped drive economic growth and job creation while empowering young people to develop the skills needed for the digital economy.

These initiatives have driven Africa’s digital transformation and empowered individuals to harness the full potential of technology to create sustainable and inclusive growth opportunities in the global economy.
