The $4 million initiative will find creative recycling solutions for waste.

To address the environmental issues caused by plastic waste in Nigeria, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Coca-Cola Foundation, and TechnoServe Nigeria have partnered to launch the Nigeria Plastic Solutions Activity (NPSA) program which aims to combat plastic waste challenges and promote sustainability in the country. Coca-Cola and USAID have contributed $4 million to support the new project focused on finding creative recycling solutions to address the pressing issue of plastic waste management.

Plastic waste is a major environmental issue worldwide, including in Nigeria, where an estimated 2.5 million metric tonnes are produced each year. The Nigeria Plastic Solutions Activity (NPSA) aims to tackle this problem by recovering 49,000 metric tonnes of plastic waste and increasing the collection capacity of 24 aggregators and 9,500 collectors. The initiative’s goal is to generate more than 10,000 eco-friendly employment opportunities, fostering the circular economy of plastic waste and advocating for a greener, more sustainable environment.

Small businesses and individuals will benefit from the new value chain.

At the launch event, Melissa Jones, the USAID Mission Director, emphasised the positive impact of plastic collection, sorting, aggregating, processing, and manufacturing on creating job opportunities. She highlighted the potential benefits for small and medium-sized businesses, as well as entry-level and semi-skilled workers within this new value chain. USAID is a global leader in fostering international development and humanitarian initiatives that aim to enhance the well-being of populations, combat poverty, promote democratic governance, and aid countries in moving towards self-sufficiency.

In Nigeria, USAID is actively involved in providing humanitarian aid, improving healthcare infrastructure, promoting transparent and responsible governance, enhancing basic education, and fostering a market-driven, trade-supportive economy. Saadia Madsbjerg, the president of the Coca-Cola Foundation, emphasised the importance of promoting sustainability within communities through the foundation’s support of creative recycling initiatives on a grassroots level. As stated by the foundation, it backs groundbreaking initiatives and organisations that tackle intricate global issues and make a tangible and enduring difference.

A more eco-friendly society and recycling system will be achieved.

Furthermore, the Coca-Cola Foundation aims to create a positive impact in communities worldwide by launching innovative programs like the one in Nigeria, which they believe will help boost recycling rates and promote sustainability. They are committed to supporting local communities as they strive towards a more eco-conscious society, building a better future one community at a time. Their mission is to make a difference in the places where they operate and where their employees reside, ensuring a brighter tomorrow for all.

Tokunbo Philip Wahab, who serves as the commissioner for the environment in Lagos State, highlighted the importance of the Nigeria Plastic Solutions Activity (NPSA). According to him, their policy and advocacy work is changing the way they see plastic waste. Instead of treating it as something to throw away, they need to start treating it as a valuable resource that requires responsible management. It is imperative that they face this responsibility directly, showing unwavering determination and resolve.

Utilising plastic waste can also contribute to the circular economy by reducing the need for virgin plastic production. By incorporating recycled plastic into manufacturing processes, we can conserve resources and reduce energy consumption. This not only helps to mitigate the environmental impact of plastic waste but also creates economic opportunities through the development of a sustainable recycling industry. Also, utilising it is essential in addressing the global plastic pollution crisis and moving towards a more sustainable future.
