Local artisans will benefit from eliminating fake foreign Adire fabric versions.

The government of Ogun is currently creating legislation to ban the sale of counterfeit imported Adire fabrics. Adebola Sofela, the Commissioner for Industry, Trade, and Investment, announced this at the 2nd Annual Business Fair hosted by the Rotary Club of Isheri North, with the theme “Bridging the Gap between Businesses and Communities 2.0” Kehinde Akintomide, acting on behalf of Sofela as Director of Industrial Promotion, emphasised the importance of laws protecting traditional fabrics from fake foreign versions.

He mentioned that the current administration had expanded and opened the Modern Adire Shared Facility at Asero and the Ogun Fashion Hub to assist Adire businesses and the fashion sector. He observed that the government had taken important steps to support the growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and create a strong and adaptable economy. Sofela recognised the Ogun State Small and Medium Enterprises Financial Empowerment Scheme as a strategic initiative to boost business competition in the state by providing ₦2 billion in grants and loans to MSMEs and implementing various other supportive business programs as part of the overall effort.

Also, the commissioner reported that plans are underway for a 1,000-hectare industrial hub designated by the state government for the Small and Medium Enterprises Industrial Land Acquisition Scheme (SILAS). He said this would allow small business owners to purchase land and start their businesses at discounted prices. Governor Dapo Abiodun has led an inspiring initiative to boost business growth, support entrepreneurship, and improve local communities. This visionary leadership has set the stage for a transformative journey towards creating a more favourable environment for economic development.

Sofela emphasised that one key requirement for accessing the interventions was the formalisation of businesses. He encouraged aspiring business owners to officially register their companies through the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and obtain a Business Premises Permit through the BPP portal. He praised the Rotary Club for hosting the fair and encouraged exhibitors to participate in the upcoming Gateway International Trade Fair. Rotary Club President Daniel Nwejike stated the importance of the business fair, emphasising its role in providing small and medium enterprises with opportunities to establish their brands and connect with others in the industry. He urged the authorities to broaden their range of support and assistance for the companies participating in the fair.

Training should be offered to local artisans to improve Adire fabrics.

Banning imported Adire fabrics in Ogun state will have several advantages for the government and local economy. Firstly, it will protect and promote the authenticity of Nigerian fabrics, an important part of the country’s cultural heritage. Local artisans and businesses producing genuine Adire fabrics will benefit from increased demand and recognition by eliminating competition from fake foreign versions. This move will also contribute to preserving traditional textile techniques and skills, ensuring that the art of Adire-making continues to thrive.

To encourage and improve Nigerian Adire fabrics, the government can implement strategies such as providing training and capacity-building programs for local artisans. By equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge, artisans can enhance the quality and design of their Adire fabrics, making them more competitive in the market. Also, they can support the marketing and branding efforts of Nigerian fabrics through initiatives like showcasing them at local and international trade fairs and promoting them as premium products with unique cultural significance.

Lastly, the government can collaborate with stakeholders in the textile industry to create a sustainable supply chain for Nigerian fabrics. By supporting local producers with access to raw materials, technology, and financing, the government can help ensure the continuous production and availability of high-quality Adire fabrics. This strategic partnership will not only boost the growth of the Adire industry but also create employment opportunities, stimulate economic growth, and position Nigerian fabrics as sought-after products locally and globally.
