Though poverty percentages are higher in Nigeria, India has its hands full.

TVC News Nigeria gives us a report on The World Poverty Clock.

The World Poverty Clock, an online resource that tracks poverty rates around the world, recently released new data that reveals India has surpassed Nigeria as the nation with the highest number of extremely poor people. As of October 2018, there were around 87 million people living in extreme poverty in Nigeria, compared to around 73 million in India. As of 2022, new study shows that India now has over 83 million people living in extreme poverty while Nigeria declined to 70 million (33%) people living in poverty. This news is particularly concerning given that India is home to more than 1.4 billion people, while Nigeria has a population of around 200 million. India’s high poverty rate also underscores the country’s vast inequality; according to a report from the World Bank, the richest 1 percent of Indians control more wealth than the poorest 70 percent combined.
