The debate surrounding the safety of consuming genetically modified food is largely centered on the long-term effects of consuming food that has been altered at the DNA level. However, the Federal Government has issued assurances that all genetically modified food that has been certified thus far is safe for human consumption. This food has been altered in order to make it resistant to pests or herbicides, or to improve its nutritional value. While there is some uncertainty surrounding the long-term safety of consuming genetically modified food, the government’s assurances provide some measure of comfort.
