Ministry aims to diversify and strengthen the country’s economy through tourism.

Ms. Lola Ade-John, the Minister of Tourism, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s dedication to revamping the tourism industry in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aiming to diversify and strengthen the country’s economy. During a meeting in Lagos with members of the Association of Nigerian Journalists and Writers of Tourism (ANJET), the minister stated the challenges faced by the industry in past administrations. She emphasised the need for proactive measures to drive progress, stating that stagnation is not an option.

The minister outlined various strategic initiatives to improve the sector, emphasising its importance as a driver of the economy. She highlighted her ministry’s recent proactive steps, such as reviving important documents like the Presidential Tourism Council and Tourism Master Plan and conducting comprehensive inventories of its assets across federal, state, and local government areas. She believes these efforts are a deliberate attempt to establish conditions that support sustainable growth. The minister revealed that her ministry has developed a strategy to involve local community leaders in protecting and enhancing national treasures to tackle issues like cultural and tourist sites being ignored.

Partnerships with local communities will improve cultural heritage.

She is dedicated to strengthening conservation efforts and preventing encroachments on Nigeria’s cultural heritage through collaborative partnerships with local community members and organisations. The ministry is also prepared to lead a new direction in Nigeria’s tourism industry that aligns with the government’s agenda. With the country’s focus shifting towards embracing diversity, the sector is seen as a key opportunity for driving economic development, promoting cultural interchange, and highlighting Nigeria’s unique heritage on a global scale.

Mr. Victor Nze, speaking on behalf of the organisation, praised Ms. Ade-John for her well-deserved promotion and for promoting open communication through the engaging meeting. He emphasised ANJET’s dedication to working closely with the ministry to support the growth, advancement, and lasting success of private sector enterprises in the nation. She received praise for successfully facilitating the engaging gathering, which addressed numerous inquiries and dismissed uncertainties regarding the ministry’s endeavours. The group affirmed their ongoing commitment to the initiatives, focusing on improving the industry and its stakeholders.

Several challenges delaying the ministry programs were outlined.

They are dedicated allies in driving forward progress, pledging to support the president’s vision communicated to the minister. During the meeting, the minister discussed various challenges, such as logistics and legislative challenges, delaying the execution of her programs at the ministry. Despite these issues, she expressed confidence that they would be resolved promptly, allowing her newly-established ministry to operate efficiently. After years of being part of a larger Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and National Orientation, the Federal Ministry of Tourism emerged in August of the previous year. This change occurred when the overarching ministry was restructured in 2015 to focus on information and culture.

Investing in marketing and promotional campaigns is crucial for reviving the sector, as it helps create awareness and interest among potential visitors by showcasing the country’s unique attractions, cultural heritage, and natural beauty through various marketing channels such as social media, advertising, and partnerships with travel agencies. Offering special promotions, discounts, and packages can further incentivise tourists to choose the country as their destination, leading to increased tourist arrivals and spending, which benefits the local economy and businesses.

A thriving sector is vital in promoting a country’s development and prosperity by attracting investments, enhancing cultural appreciation, and promoting positive international relationships.
