Weather forecasts and climate awareness will be enhanced through investment.

In order to enhance weather forecasts across the nation, the Federal Government said that it would increase its investments in the generation of meteorological data. At the event in Abuja to commemorate the World Meteorological Day with the theme “The future of weather, climate and water across generations. The data generated are so critical for past assessments and future predictions including forecasting”, the Director-General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Mansur Matazu pledged during his keynote speech.

Prof. Effiom Oku, Director, Research and Training at NiMet, spoke on behalf of Prof. Matazu, saying that the Federal Government has been financing the gathering of meteorological data across the land, water, and the atmosphere. By engaging the country’s young brains, NiMet has demonstrated its commitment to the country’s future. Their weather observers are often relatively young people who get their start on the pitch. Also impressive is the Young Meteorological Ambassadors programme they implemented, in which some members are present at the event.

More young people will be engaged through the MOU with Institutions.

As a means of bolstering national and regional growth, he said the agency had inked MoUs with a number of Nigerian universities to increase meteorology’s visibility in higher education. He noted that NiMet’s services remained available in a wide variety of industries, including aviation, agriculture, water resources management, construction, telecommunications, tourism, defense, environment, and communications. He claims that the agency’s youthful and seasoned employees alike contribute to the growth of NiMet’s goods and services by coming up with novel approaches to the agency’s established practices.

Furthermore, the agency’s meteorological Early Warning System, developed in accordance with the United Nations Early Warning for All, has had a favorable effect on their regular publications and on-demand services like the Seasonal Climate Prediction as a result. In addition to TV weather forecasts, Marine Bulletin, Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts and Impact-Based Weather Forecasts, with Hydrometeorological Bulletin, Agrometeorological Bulletin, Annual State of Climate report in Nigeria, Climate and Health Bulletin, Daily weather outlooks and bulletins, and TV weather forecasts. He added that there were additional standard and on-demand goods and services that were available in all socioeconomic categories.

Nigerians should invest in future generations and raise awareness.

The head of NiMet stated that the organization was aiming to maintain its historical resources, such as publications and instruments, while also generating new resources in order to give a solid knowledge foundation for future generations. He asked each and every Nigerian to invest in the future and raise awareness about the risks of climate change, which include harsh weather as well as the loss of livelihoods, in order to make the world a safer place for all people.

In his speech, Dr. Bernard Gomez, the WMO representative for North, Central, and West Africa, stated that research and innovation were also essential instruments for increasing the contribution of meteorological and climate services to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. Everyone needs to keep in mind at all times that the effects of climate change pose a risk to the accomplishment of a great deal of these objectives, as well as their own personal aspirations.

Meteorological Day is commemorated globally to raise climate awareness.
