Tinubu discusses key sectors with new envoys

Nigeria's skilled youth population presents opportunities for collaboration.

President Bola Tinubu has warmly welcomed the newly-appointed ambassadors to Nigeria, emphasising his dedication to strengthening collaboration in education, mining, culture, and tourism. The President officially accepted the Letters of Credence from the High Commissioner of Jamaica, Lincoln Downer; Ambassador of Romania, Florin Talapan; and High Commissioner of Australia, Leilani Bin-Juda, during a ceremony held in Abuja. Tinubu promised to provide Nigeria’s backing for a pleasant visit and reiterated his dedication to fostering strong economic, cultural, and diplomatic ties through an open approach.

During his meeting with the High Commissioner of Jamaica, the President stressed the significance of working together on trade, investment, and the Technical Aids Corps. He reassured Jamaica of Nigeria’s willingness to revive energy cooperation, focusing on climate change and the use of gas as a transitional fuel. Understanding each other is key to any relationship. He expressed that Nigeria’s vibrant and skilled young people share a cultural connection with Jamaica, presenting an opportunity for collaboration in culture and tourism that will positively impact the youth in both nations.

Investors to consider opportunities within Jamaica’s economy.

The Prime Minister of Jamaica expressed interest in collaborating with Nigeria across multiple sectors, including energy, culture, trade, investment, and tourism, through the Jamaican High Commissioner. The High Commissioner also mentioned the upcoming visit of a Jamaican business delegation to Nigeria and encouraged Nigerian investors to consider opportunities within Jamaica’s special economic zones. Tinubu expressed gratitude for the enduring bond between Nigeria and Australia during his meeting with the High Commissioner of Australia in Nigeria.

As a member of various international organisations like the United Nations and the Commonwealth, he recognised the common values and interests of Nigeria and Australia. The President highlighted the need to enhance collaboration in the mining sector, especially after Dr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, took steps to strengthen the relationship between the two countries in this area. The Minister of Solid Minerals recently visited Australia, and they are excited for future opportunities to work together in this field.

Education, energy, and defence sectors will be enhanced.

Also, Tinubu mentioned a readiness to enhance collaboration in the field of education. The Australian High Commissioner conveyed eagerness for increased partnership during his time in Nigeria. Being the first Australian indigenous High Commissioner to Nigeria, he expressed confidence that his tenure would be beneficial for both parties, as he assured the President. The Australian High Commissioner personally invited Tinubu to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa and explore the possibility of visiting Australia during that time.

In addition, Tinubu and the Romanian Ambassador discussed enhancing cooperation between Nigeria and Romania during their meeting. Tinubu further promised to seek out additional opportunities for partnership with the EU-member nation, while the Romanian Ambassador emphasised his dedication to fostering stronger relationships between the two countries. Together, they highlighted potential areas for collaboration in education, energy, and defence. Additionally, the Romanian Ambassador revealed intentions to expand scholarship programs for Nigerian students seeking education in Romania.
