Paper bags by Ebees expands across West Africa, retaining lifespan of products.

Paper bags by Ebees is an online store founded in 2016 by Ms. Chidiebere Nnorom and has its location in Lagos, Nigeria. The company manufactures and sells eco-friendly alternative packaging products to Small and Medium-scale Enterprises (SMEs) across West Africa. Their services, manufacturing of quality packaging products and services, are mostly rendered to food, agriculture and fashion sectors. Products manufactured by the company include boxes, bags, wooden cutlery, and straws; these products are seen as alternatives to single-use plastic packaging as they are reusable.

Amidst the company’s expansion of its business activities across West Africa – reaching out to more businesses – it is also sponsoring the promotion of a circular business model to aid the implementation of its recycling outfit. The specific aim of the organization is to ensure that the lifespan of products is retained through maintenance, upcycling, reusage, or remanufacturing. It is a medium of stating that circularity has to do with the maintenance of value with the avoidance of waste.

Additionally, Women Entrepreneurship for Africa selected Paper bags by Ebees as one of the top 30 female-led businesses in the whole of Africa for a grant funding and tailor-made business mentoring. The Co-founder of the company, Ms. Chidiebere Nnorom, also stated that the company is fundraising for the acceleration of its operations across West Africa. Also, to advance its current capacity, it looks forward to debt financing with below ten percent interest rates, grant funding and equity.

Besides the funding it has received from Orange Corners, Nigeria (OCIF), Tony Elumelu Foundation and Nigerian Export Promotion Council looks forward to pitching at the Team Europe Initiative-Investing in young Businesses in Africa (TEI IYBA) event which will take place at the Marriott in Lagos as it would generate more funds. It is therefore visible that a huge percentage of the latest funding round of the management is derived from grants. In total, it has raised $10k.

Firm looks to focus on developing products from recycled materials.

Since over four years of its establishment, majority of the exclusive restaurants and hotels in Lagos have enjoyed their services. However, the realization of a business store that ensures circularity in business is beginning to dawn on more businesses as they begin to offer patronage. Paper bags are manufactured from recycled paper and are sold at a cheaper rate of below fifty percent, compared to Folding Box Board (FBB) Polyethylene coated bags and is likewise recyclable with a high recycle value.

Furthermore, the management aims at driving a local circular economy and gathering used paper bags through partnership with recycling companies. Currently, there is hope that its operations can aid mitigation against GHGs as it has begun to liaison with a team of experts at a UNIDO- and Federal Government of Nigeria-sponsored event, GCIP. Also, one of the major plans of the firm is to focus more on the development of products from recycled materials rather than paper based.

President of the African Packaging Organization, Executive Director Institute of Packaging Nigeria and Board Member of World Packaging Organization, Alhaji Ahmed Alex Omah, asserted that the plans of Paper bags by Ebees is achievable and beneficial for every sector in Nigeria. He further stated that to foster the achievement of these plans, the Nigeria Packaging Academy has collaborated with the Institute of Packaging South Africa for the purpose of structuring and certifying professionals in advanced packaging technology sectors and building human resources.
