This is regarding the deep unease over worsening security predicament in Nig.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urgently demanded that the escalating cases of kidnapping and the rampage by bandits, which have befallen certain regions of the nation, be met with immediate action. They insist on a declaration of a state of emergency to be imposed upon the security crisis currently gripping the country. On January 19, 2024, Oladimeji Uthman, the individual responsible for overseeing the student’s Senate body, revealed this information through an official statement.

Uthman voiced his deep unease over the worsening security predicament in Nigeria, with a specific focus on the alarming rise in incidents of kidnapping and banditry. These issues have inflicted a disproportionate toll on the Northern region and various other zones across the country, causing great distress to the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). The urgent need for swift action is glaringly evident in the wake of recent incidents such as the kidnapping of a student in their fourth year at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and the heartbreaking loss of Nabeeha Al-Kadriyar’s life.

Nigerians face the urgencies & constant occurrences of criminal activities.

Hence, NANS expresses deep concern regarding these distressing occurrences and calls upon the Nigerian Federal Government to urgently announce a state of emergency in the impacted regions, primarily concentrating efforts on the Northern territories. Nigerian citizens face the urgencies and constant occurrences of criminal activities, leading to a demand for a state of emergency. These crimes have the audacity to jeopardize the safety and security of the nation’s population. He observed that the implementation of a state of emergency would provide the government with a crucial opportunity to tackle the security situation in a more serious manner.

His suggestion included urging the FG to prioritize collaboration among stakeholders for the purpose of intelligence gathering. NANS recognizes the government’s continuous attempts to tackle security concerns, however, given the severity of the issue, NANS insists on the implementation of supplementary actions. An official proclamation of a state of emergency would empower the government with advanced resources to effectively combat these imminent security risks. The promotion of stronger relationships between security agencies and local communities, heightened intelligence operations, and the allocation of dedicated resources to empower law enforcement agencies are all suggested by NANS for improved collaboration.

Immediate declaration of a state of emergency is necessary.

With the matter at hand being of utmost importance, NANS asserts the necessity of a prompt and all-encompassing action to ensure the protection and welfare of the people of Nigeria. The attention given by the government to this urgent issue of national security challenges is duly acknowledged and valued by NANS. It is their firm belief that in order to tackle the existing concerns effectively, the immediate declaration of a state of emergency and the implementation of all essential measures need to be undertaken.

Furthermore, Uthman concluded that exhibiting an unwavering reaction will not solely provide solace to the general public, but also serve as an unequivocal communication to those engaged in unlawful activities that their behaviours shall face no leniency. NANS has a commitment towards striving to assist students in maneuvering through the intricate process of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) exams in Nigeria. The primary objective of the association is to furnish students, parents, and educators with extensive and trustworthy insights regarding JAMB exams and associated subjects.
