Reducing unnecessary spending will enhance the economy and workers' well-being.

Festus Osifo, the President of the Trade Union Congress, has urged the government to reduce unnecessary spending to enhance the well-being of employees. In a press interview, Osifo stressed the importance of Negotiation principles, stating that emotions should not play a role in negotiations. He pointed out that the government raised concerns about affordability, prompting the union to advise the government to reduce unnecessary expenditures and enhance the well-being of workers. He shared that at a recent gathering, the union expressed willingness to wait until midnight for a better offer but was disappointed with the lack of progress.

The orders to mobilise had been expected earlier, as they had sent several signals to prompt action from the authorities. He further explained that when considering a strike, the union considers various factors that motivate the people in the country to participate, but ultimately, the decision to strike is a significant one for the Labour Congress. In addition, he pointed out that measures were taken to reduce the strike’s impact, such as permitting students to sit for exams and keeping a few hospitals operating.

Strike was successful because it resulted in three major accomplishments.

Osifo firmly opposed the government’s suggestion of a ₦60,000 Minimum Wage as definitive, advocating for a higher figure and stating that workers should not have to endure two months of suffering while waiting for a new minimum wage. It is imperative to address the workers’ suffering promptly. He deemed the strike successful because it resulted in three major accomplishments, which are the government recognising the possibility of exceeding ₦60,000, a promise to finalise talks within seven days, and heightened focus from the president, who issued directives to tackle the matter.

He remained optimistic that an agreement based on the principle of negotiation could be reached in a week. He briefly mentioned the union’s request to equip public transportation with CNG, which could lower transportation expenses by 70 percent and positively impact different industries nationwide. He also mentioned the union’s plans to discuss Electricity Tariffs with the government, which has been unattended since they had requested it on May 1st. He continues stressing the importance of taking the initiative in tackling national issues to avoid strikes, highlighting that labour disputes worldwide inevitably lead to economic downturns.

TUC promotes the welfare and rights of Nigerian labourers nationwide.

Under the direction of Festus Osifo, the TUC is a key player in promoting the Welfare and rights of Nigerian labourers. The union’s negotiating strategy is a reflection of its dedication to making sure that workers’ demands are satisfied and that their views are heard. The TUC emphasises the value of budgetary responsibility and the reallocation of resources to industries that directly benefit workers by pressing the government to reduce wasteful spending. This approach encourages a more effective use of the country’s budget in addition to improving working conditions.

Also, the federal government might take a strategic approach, including extensive economic reforms, to address the current issues. First, enforcing strict policies to reduce unnecessary spending and redirecting the funds to vital sectors like infrastructure, education, and health can improve the working environment for employees. Likewise, spending on public transport might save a lot of money on transport expenses and stimulate overall economic Productivity primarily if Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is used as the TUC has urged. This change would help the workers as well as the Sustainability of the environment.

Lastly, the government must prioritise having open and inclusive communication with labour unions to build trust and guarantee that policies are established correctly. Workers’ purchasing power can be preserved by forming a special task team to regularly assess and modify the minimum wage following economic reality and inflation. Also, as Osifo pointed out, the government must take the initiative to address persistent problems like electricity rates. The government may reduce the likelihood of strikes and promote a more stable and prosperous economic climate by holding ongoing talks and making decisions based on the best available data.
