Google to train Nigerian journalists in AI

Nigeria has recorded an innovative development as Google Nigeria launched a program to provide AI training for journalists, starting with a group of 25 female members of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ). This initiative marks the beginning of a series of training sessions to be held in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, underscoring Google’s commitment to the continent. The focus of the training was on familiarizing journalists with advanced technologies, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI), in order to improve their abilities in reporting and storytelling. It provided an overview of the various AI tools that are currently available and how they can be optimally used in communication.

Johannesburg native Claudine Beaumont took charge of a virtual training session for journalists from various media organizations, providing hands-on guidance through practical exercises. The in-person portion focused on demonstrating different Google AI tools and was led by Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, who serves as Google’s Head of Communications for West Africa. During the session, Kola-Ogunlade stressed the growing importance of AI in transforming the way people work, communicate, and navigate the tech industry and society as a whole.
