Bosun Tijani, the Communications Minister of Nigeria, believes that the country will become a leader in artificial intelligence (AI) within the continent, Africa, due to the significant government investments that are currently being made. Nigeria has been announced by the federal government as the country poised to take the lead in Africa and have a major impact on the global Artificial Intelligence (AI) ecosystem, as a result of the creation of a national AI strategy.

Tijani, the Minister in charge of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, announced the details during the commencement of a four-day workshop for stakeholders focused on developing a national strategic plan for Artificial Intelligence (AI). The field of artificial intelligence focuses on creating, implementing, and managing computer systems capable of mimicking various aspects of human cognition. The workshop focused on creating a comprehensive strategy and implementation plan for Nigeria’s national AI strategy, with an emphasis on high-level development.

More so, Tijani expressed confidence that Nigeria’s significant Investment in the Technology would position the country as a leader in the field across Africa. Considering the impact on a global scale, Nigeria’s focus on this technology has the potential to position the country as a key player in Africa. It is important to consider both local and international implications when discussing advancements in this field. The country stands out for prioritizing investments in talent, artificial intelligence, and computers.

This is considered a rare initiative in comparison to other African nations. This unique approach positions the country to take on leadership roles within the local community, region, and even on a global scale. There is potential for a shift in perspective within the next three to five years, where different ideas will blend together seamlessly. By proactively considering the approach now, the country has the opportunity to innovate and progress without adhering to outdated methods, he explained.

AI should not be perceived solely as a technological advancement.

He stated that digital technology has already become a common presence in Asia, America, and Europe, and emphasized the importance of Nigeria and Africa embracing this reality as well. He emphasized that Nigeria must not fall behind. He mentioned that artificial intelligence was a recent development, noting that countries are all trying to navigate this new technology in their own unique ways. The global impact of AI is undeniable, as nations quietly work to harness its potential.

Dr. Kashifu Abdullahi, the Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), emphasized the importance of this approach as a means to boost Economic Diversification in the country. His statement emphasized that artificial intelligence should not be perceived solely as a technological advancement, but rather as a revolutionary tool with the potential to enhance various industries and stimulate economic growth. Accomplishing this task successfully will greatly benefit the nation in numerous ways. AI can play a crucial role in shaping economic diversification plans for Nigeria and Africa.

By incorporating this technology into the strategy development process, the nation can create more effective diversification strategies for its economy.
