The fund has supported 1,500 Nigerian students and addressed delay issues.

In recent years, the Federal Government has released about ₦3.8 billion to support Nigerian scholars who were stuck abroad. Sonny Echono, the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), made this statement in Abuja during a meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on TETFund. He announced that the fund had supported 1,500 students with the ₦3.8 billion. Echono addressed the issue of scholarship payment delays by explaining how scholars from different countries, including the United Kingdom and Malaysia, were worried about the impact of the recent increase in foreign exchange rates.

However, the issues were raised with the National Assembly, the Presidential Villa, the Ministry of Education, and TETFund. Their joy was immense as they received overwhelmingly positive feedback, ultimately leading to the President’s approval and the successful implementation of what they referred to as the bailout or assistance. They were able to witness that particular aspect of the challenge. Funding for institutions used to be sent directly to schools every time, but now it is up to the institutions to ensure that students receive their money promptly.

Nigeria advanced from 9th to 7th in African research funding.

Yet, whether for valid or invalid reasons, many institutions have voiced their grievances about the lengthy processing times for transfers to the central bank. Now, as a component of the intervention, they are responsible for making direct payments to the institution. Echono further disclosed that the country had previously needed help to secure research grants. Nevertheless, he mentioned that progress had been achieved as the country advanced from 9th to 7th place in African research grants.

Additionally, the TETFund has provided critical support to the Nigerian Education sector. Established to enhance the country’s education quality, it focuses on funding infrastructural development, academic staff training, and research across tertiary institutions. By extending its support to Nigerian students stranded abroad, the fund has demonstrated its commitment to addressing the domestic and international challenges scholars in the country face. This initiative underscores the fund’s adaptability and responsiveness to the evolving needs of the academic community.

Also, the financial assistance provided to stranded Nigerian students abroad is not just a lifeline for those individuals but has broader implications for the country’s educational and economic landscape. By ensuring that these students can continue their studies uninterrupted, TETFund helps to maintain the flow of skilled and educated individuals who will eventually contribute to the country’s development. This intervention also enhances the nation’s reputation as a country that supports its citizens regardless of where they are, promoting a sense of national pride and unity among the people at home and abroad.

Moreover, the successful implementation of this financial support can encourage more students in the country to pursue education abroad, knowing that a robust system is in place to support them in times of need. This could increase the number of Nigerians gaining international exposure and expertise, which can be beneficial when they return home. The diverse experiences and knowledge they acquire can drive innovation, promote international collaborations, and advance the country’s academic and professional sectors.
