Govt aims for 2 million creative economy jobs

Nigeria should move from reliance on oil and prioritise the creative industry.

Hannatu Musa Musawa, the Minister of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy, has announced plans to create job opportunities for up to two million skilled individuals in Nigeria. During the management retreat in Abuja, Musawa addressed the attendees, emphasising the importance of evaluating the advancements achieved since President Bola Tinubu established the ministry in 2023. The event’s main objective is to recognise the challenges facing the ministry’s growth and devise creative solutions to drive the ministry and its affiliated agencies towards success.

The minister emphasised the need for Nigeria to move away from relying solely on oil and instead prioritise the creative industry, which would showcase Nigerians’ talents and contribute to economic growth. They aim to shift away from oil by investing in the creative industry. By collaborating with experts in the creative field who are passionate about the ministry’s mission, they aim to leverage Nigerians’ talents to enhance the country’s overall value. Creating jobs is a top priority and they intend to generate above 2 million of it by 2027.

Ministry targets a $100 billion GDP boost for Nigeria by 2030.

In addition, the target is to increase Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by $100 billion by 2030. This ambitious plan is achievable, and they are committed to putting in the necessary effort and determination to make it happen. Considering the ministry’s responsibilities, they are essential in moulding the country’s artistic and cultural environment and advocating for the protection and promotion of Nigeria’s diverse cultural traditions. Also, Ministers, Presidential Aides, Permanent Secretaries, and Top Government Functionaries are expected to coordinate their work with the President’s priorities of the November 2023 Cabinet Retreat. As discussed during the Retreat, they all must pay attention to the Ministerial Deliverables and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) established in the Performance Bond signed by her, Permanent Secretary, and Mr. President. These guidelines chart the course of their work, tracking advancements and holding them responsible for themselves, stakeholders, and the citizens of Nigeria.

During her speech, Hadiza Bala Usman, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination and Head of the Central Delivery Coordination Unit (CDCU), emphasised the significance of the creative industry as a source of various opportunities, a driver of economic development, and a key player in societal change that deserves support from all. She felt reassured knowing that the ministry was in charge of this crucial responsibility, with skilled individuals ready to implement and guide the strategies, initiatives, and undertakings necessary for the government and Nigeria to reach their goals.
