Fireboy speaks on the evolution of Afrobeats to a more fused sound.
Recent trends have seen a host of Nigerian musicians coming out to denounce their Afrobeats claim. The likes of Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido and Fireboy have all been vocal about this stance, heralding huge scrutiny from Nigerians. In a new interview, Fireboy has given a clearer explanation of the evolution of the Afrobeats genre. The “Peru” star noted that the legendary Fela created Afrobeat by fusing jazz with the African musical style before passing it down to the new generation who have fused the sound (Afrobeat) with dancehall, pop and RnB to create the Afrobeats sound.
“Fela, the Godfather of Afrobeat took the culture, mixed it with jazz & made what we know as Afrobeat. Then he passed it down to different generations, we mix our own with Pop, RnB, Dance Hall etc”
