Rotimi says he took Afrobeats to America before Wizkid’s collab with Drake.
American singer and actor, Rotimi has been an instrumental figure in the acceptance of the Afrobeats genre in the United States. With hit songs like “Love Riddim” and “In My Bed”, he has been one of the biggest Afrobeats stars in diaspora, churning out big songs and featuring some of the genre’s local artists. In a new interview, the “Power” actor claimed that he took Afrobeats to the US way before Wizkid’s 2016 feature on “One Dance” with Drake. Many fans have come out to oppose this claim, noting that stars like D’Banj, Don Jazzy and even Wizkid with his Ojuelegba had had minimal success in the United States before his breakout Afrobeats song.
“I can comfortably say I brought Afrobeats to America and this was before Wizkid had that record with Drake”
