The Nigerian military shut down some 40 illegal refineries across four states in the Niger Delta earlier this month. Millions of litres of stolen crude oil were recovered. Black market pipeline operations are polluting the environment. Burning crude in improvised tanks is not only illegal, but it also creates harmful emissions that can be dangerous to both people and wildlife. The environmental consequences of these activities are significant and include the release of hazardous air pollutants, the destruction of mangroves and other coastal habitats, and the contamination of water supplies.
