Illegal refining does not follow good practice and destroys the environment.

FRANCE 24 English gives us a report on air pollution surrounding illegal refineries.

The Nigerian military shut down some 40 illegal refineries across four states in the Niger Delta earlier this month. Millions of litres of stolen crude oil were recovered. Black market pipeline operations are polluting the environment. Burning crude in improvised tanks is not only illegal, but it also creates harmful emissions that can be dangerous to both people and wildlife. The environmental consequences of these activities are significant and include the release of hazardous air pollutants, the destruction of mangroves and other coastal habitats, and the contamination of water supplies. Oil can take years to break down in the environment, which is why it is important to take measures to clean it up as quickly as possible when it spills. The oil will gradually evaporate, but it can also be broken down by bacteria and other organisms. However, this process can take a long time, and the oil can cause a great deal of damage in the meantime.
