The Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Limited has announced the launch of a Space-Tech Hackathon and Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) training in North-West Nigeria. The initiative, which aims to equip young people with innovative Technology skills and enhance Broadband connectivity in remote areas, is set to take place in Dutse, Jigawa, from 7th to 11th April. According to NIGCOMSAT, the programme targets university students, start-ups, and local innovators across Kano, Kebbi, Kaduna, Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara, and Jigawa states.
Aisha Bantam, Head of Corporate Affairs at NIGCOMSAT, emphasised that the initiative seeks to foster technological Innovation and Economic Development in the region. She noted that the hackathon would provide a platform for participants to identify challenges, develop creative solutions, and receive mentorship in satellite technology. Additionally, 100 youths will be trained in VSAT installation, a critical skill for expanding Internet Access in underserved communities. The best-performing team in the hackathon will gain entry into the NIGCOMSAT Accelerator Programme, allowing them to refine and implement their projects.
Jigawa State set to co-host space-tech empowerment programme.
NIGCOMSAT’s Managing Director, Jane Egerton-Idehen, highlighted that the initiative is part of the organisation’s broader efforts to drive digital inclusion and address youth unemployment. She explained that by equipping young people with practical satellite technology skills, the programme would not only create job opportunities but also support local technological advancements that can bridge Nigeria’s digital divide. She further disclosed that Jigawa State would co-host the event, reinforcing the importance of regional collaboration in fostering innovation.
Beyond skill development, the hackathon and VSAT training align with Nigeria’s broader goal of leveraging Space Technology for national development. Improved satellite connectivity can enhance communication networks, support e-learning in remote areas, and strengthen Digital Infrastructure in sectors such as Agriculture and security. With increasing reliance on digital solutions, initiatives like this help position Nigeria as a competitive player in the global tech space. By equipping young Nigerians with practical skills, the programme not only fosters innovation but also lays the foundation for long-term advancements in satellite technology, which could have significant economic and social benefits.
Partnerships could enhance long-term impact of training initiatives.
While NIGCOMSAT has launched similar programmes in other regions, stakeholders have called for sustained Investment in satellite technology to ensure lasting impact. Experts argue that without a structured plan for integrating these skills into the job market, beneficiaries may struggle to translate their training into viable career opportunities. Expanding partnerships with Private Sector players and government agencies could improve the effectiveness of these interventions. If properly harnessed, such collaborations could provide internship placements, funding for start-ups, and research opportunities that would help participants apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios.
As preparations for the North-West hackathon intensify, potential participants have been encouraged to register via the official NIGCOMSAT portal. With high expectations surrounding the programme, its success could pave the way for further regional training initiatives, ultimately fostering a more inclusive Digital Economy in Nigeria. By engaging university students, start-ups, and local innovators, the initiative not only creates a platform for technological creativity but also encourages knowledge-sharing among participants from different backgrounds. This interaction could inspire new ideas and collaborations that extend beyond the duration of the hackathon itself.

Ultimately, by strengthening the link between technology and economic growth, NIGCOMSAT’s initiative highlights the potential of space technology in shaping Nigeria’s future. However, for this effort to be truly transformative, it must be complemented by policies that ensure sustained investment in digital Infrastructure and job creation in the space technology sector. Beyond technical training, there is also a need for continuous mentorship and Business Development support to help young innovators scale their solutions. If these measures are put in place, initiatives like the Space-Tech Hackathon could become a catalyst for a more technologically advanced and economically resilient Nigeria.
