Senator Shehu Sani, a former lawmaker from Kaduna, is cautioning northern leaders against their intention to remove President Bola Tinubu from office during the 2027 presidential elections. He believes that such a decision has the potential to jeopardize the unity of the nation. The ex-legislator advised leaders from the northern region to align with the initiatives and projects of the Tinubu government that can positively impact the northern sector of Nigeria, rather than solely focusing on increasing their own political influence.
Sani expressed his belief that political forces in the North are coming together in an attempt to push out the government of Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, using former President Buhari as a unifying figure. Their goal is to revive his political prospects among the general public and paint the government as neglectful of the North, failing to fulfill its campaign pledges despite receiving strong support from the region. During Buhari’s eight-year reign, no significant southerner attempted to overthrow his government or challenge his authority.
If southern politicians choose to unite Nig could cease to exist.
Furthermore, it is important to prioritize the well-being and unity of the entire nation before seeking power. The focus should be on creating a cohesive and peaceful Nigeria, as it remains a vulnerable country. If southern politicians choose to unite and take a firm stance, Nigeria could cease to exist. For the sake of national unity and the long-term success of the country, it is imperative that they set aside their own aspirations for the year 2027. After the second term of this administration, the North will be justified in demanding authority based on ethical grounds.
He warned that the region will suffer from the consequences of this thirst for power, ultimately disrupting the unity and overall Peace of the nation. Additionally, Sani highlighted the urgency for leaders in the Northern region to tackle the challenges that are impacting their communities. It is important to remember that northern Nigeria is facing issues of Insecurity and poverty, among various other challenges. According to Shehu Sani, those from the North have held political power for an extended period of time, leading to opportunities for development in the region. This power has allowed them to tackle issues such as insecurity, education, underdevelopment, and income inequality.
Northern Nigeria has not seen any benefit from having power.
Regrettably, the power that was originally intended for good was instead abused. The Northern Region leads in Poverty levels, but falls behind in industrial development and overall progress. The current issues in the Northern region can be traced back to a long history of poor leadership, corruption, and neglect. Leaders have failed to properly develop their communities, resulting in challenges that are faced today. Northern Nigeria has not seen any benefit from having power for the duration of time it has been available.
The North’s lagging development indicators necessitate a focused approach to fostering growth in the region. However, the current situation is disheartening. Back in 2015, there was a sense of optimism following the previous eight years. There was a strong belief that the newly appointed leadership would tackle these critical issues, but unfortunately, this was not the case. The purpose of power should be to serve the majority. Power in the Northern region should focus on alleviating poverty and insecurity, promoting development, and not exploiting a small group of individuals who rely on the country’s Economy for their own gain.

In the meantime, Shehu Sani urged the Tinubu government to enforce restructuring, emphasizing that it presents a structured chance for Nigerian citizens to tackle the issues of inadequate development. Sani emphasized the importance of the Northern region aligning with the current administration’s policies and programs in order to effectively address the challenges at hand. Fortunately, many key positions in the Security apparatus are filled by individuals from the northern region. The National Security Adviser (Nigeria), the Director General of the Department of State Services, and a few other roles are held by northerners.
