On January 10, Deputy Secretary Kurt Campbell led the inaugural U.S.-Nigeria Technology Dialogue in Washington, D.C., a landmark event that aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation in critical technology sectors. The dialogue brought together a senior Nigerian delegation led by Hon. Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani. This high-level meeting builds on a series of engagements between the two nations, including Deputy Secretary Campbell’s visit to Abuja for the U.S.-Nigeria Binational Commission in April 2024, as well as key events hosted by the U.S. Department of State, demonstrating both countries’ commitment to advancing their partnership in digital transformation and innovation.
A central outcome of the dialogue was the signing of a $2.095 million grant to support the expansion of Nigeria’s Broadband infrastructure. This grant is aimed at assessing the feasibility of deploying 90,000 km of new fibre optic backbone across the country, which aligns with Nigeria’s National Broadband Plan 2020-2025. With this initiative, Nigeria seeks to boost its broadband penetration from 42.27 percent to 70 percent, ensuring that 90 percent of the population has access to affordable and reliable internet connectivity. One significant area of focus was the expansion of AI-enabled biotechnology, aiming to address critical global challenges such as health and food security, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.
Additionally, the dialogue featured a roundtable discussion with over 25 representatives from U.S. and Nigerian industry sectors, including aerospace, telecommunications, AI, satellites, cybersecurity, fintech, and digital infrastructure. The conversation focused on fostering public-private sector partnerships to drive digital talent development and innovation in these key areas. A panel discussion on advancing public-private investment in innovation highlighted the potential for stronger collaboration between governments and businesses to accelerate technological growth and enhance digital skills for a more inclusive future.

Moreover, a second panel explored how the development of critical Infrastructure could shape the future of artificial intelligence (AI) adoption and deployment.
