Broadband expansion, AI, and biotechnology at the forefront of innovation.

On January 10, Deputy Secretary Kurt Campbell led the inaugural U.S.-Nigeria Technology Dialogue in Washington, D.C., a landmark event that aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation in critical technology sectors. The dialogue brought together a senior Nigerian delegation led by Hon. Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani. This high-level meeting builds on a series of engagements between the two nations, including Deputy Secretary Campbell’s visit to Abuja for the U.S.-Nigeria Binational Commission in April 2024, as well as key events hosted by the U.S. Department of State, demonstrating both countries’ commitment to advancing their partnership in digital transformation and innovation.

A central outcome of the dialogue was the signing of a $2.095 million grant to support the expansion of Nigeria’s Broadband infrastructure. This grant is aimed at assessing the feasibility of deploying 90,000 km of new fibre optic backbone across the country, which aligns with Nigeria’s National Broadband Plan 2020-2025. With this initiative, Nigeria seeks to boost its broadband penetration from 42.27 percent to 70 percent, ensuring that 90 percent of the population has access to affordable and reliable internet connectivity. This Investment is crucial for facilitating Nigeria’s growing digital Economy and strengthening collaboration with the U.S. in the technology sector.

Strengthening partnerships to unlock opportunities.

Throughout the discussions, both parties also emphasised the importance of enhancing digital trade, promoting innovation-driven economic growth, and expanding Artificial Intelligence (AI) collaboration. The dialogue highlighted the need for both countries to work together on strengthening the resilience and Security of essential services while developing a skilled workforce to meet the demands of the digital age. One significant area of focus was the expansion of AI-enabled biotechnology, aiming to address critical global challenges such as health and food security, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.

Additionally, the dialogue featured a roundtable discussion with over 25 representatives from U.S. and Nigerian industry sectors, including aerospace, telecommunications, AI, satellites, cybersecurity, fintech, and digital infrastructure. The conversation focused on fostering public-private sector partnerships to drive digital talent development and innovation in these key areas. A panel discussion on advancing public-private investment in innovation highlighted the potential for stronger collaboration between governments and businesses to accelerate technological growth and enhance digital skills for a more inclusive future.

Creating sustainable solutions through AI-enabled biotechnology.

Moreover, a second panel explored how the development of critical Infrastructure could shape the future of artificial intelligence (AI) adoption and deployment. Robust infrastructure, including data centres, high-speed internet networks, and consistent energy supply, plays a foundational role in unlocking AI’s full potential. Without these systems in place, the promises of AI, such as improved healthcare delivery, enhanced agricultural practices, and more efficient business operations, would remain out of reach. Investing in these resources also lays the groundwork for bridging the digital divide, particularly in regions where infrastructure gaps hinder access to advanced technologies. For countries like Nigeria, strengthening this infrastructure can open up pathways for innovation and economic growth.

In a similar vein, the convergence of AI and Biotechnology presents immense opportunities to address pressing global challenges, from Public Health to food security. By combining AI’s data processing capabilities with the problem-solving potential of biotechnology, transformative solutions can be developed to tackle issues such as disease outbreaks, malnutrition, and environmental degradation. This collaboration could lead to the creation of predictive models for identifying health risks, optimising agricultural productivity, and even accelerating scientific research in underfunded sectors. For sub-Saharan Africa, where these challenges are often most pronounced, AI-enabled biotechnology could serve as a catalyst for sustainable progress. Such initiatives not only offer technical solutions but also highlight the importance of fostering international partnerships to create a more equitable and innovative future.
