The Nigeria Auto Journalists Association (NAJA) has ushered in a new era of leadership, electing Theodore Opara, the Motoring Editor of Vanguard Newspapers, as its chairman for the next three years. The election, held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos, witnessed a remarkable voter turnout, with Opara securing an impressive 62% of the total votes cast. This strong mandate from members reflects a shared desire for forward-thinking leadership that will elevate both the association and the practice of automotive journalism in Nigeria.

Chairman of the Election Committee, Ben Oghifo, described the electoral process as transparent and credible and set the tone for what many hope will be a time of rebirth for NAJA. Oghifo commended both members and contestants for their dignified conduct, stating that the smooth conduct of the election reflected the association’s deep commitment to democratic values. Joining Opara in the new executive lineup are respected media professionals: Segun Odunewu was elected as Vice Chairman, Adrian Egonu as General Secretary, Cees Harmon as Assistant Secretary, Daphne Uduneje as Financial Secretary/Treasurer, and Benjamin Alade as Auditor.

Opara outlines a strategic vision to elevate the industry.

Each brings years of media experience and a shared vision to reposition the association as a leading force in Nigeria’s auto journalism industry. In his acceptance speech, Opara expressed profound gratitude to members for the confidence reposed in him. He acknowledged the legacy of past leaders and pledged to raise the bar of professionalism, ethical journalism, and industry relevance. Opara emphasized that NAJA must not only keep pace with the rapidly evolving auto journalism industry but also become a trusted voice.

To achieve these goals, he laid out a robust vision focused on strengthening partnerships with stakeholders across the automotive value chain—ranging from manufacturers and dealers to government agencies and consumers. Central to his agenda are capacity-building initiatives such as training workshops, mentorship programs for young auto journalists, and advocacy for improved Welfare and working conditions for members. Opara’s emergence as chairman is seen by many as a major step forward for NAJA, considering his decades of experience covering the automotive beat and his in-depth understanding of the challenges facing the industry.

High hopes as Opara, team take charge of leadership.

His tenure is expected to bring growth, fresh energy, and strategic collaborations that will further strengthen the association’s relevance just as a watchdog of the auto sector, but as an active player in its development. Outgoing chairman Mike Ochonma, in his farewell remarks, thanked the association’s members for their support during his tenure. He highlighted the milestones achieved under his leadership and urged members to give their full backing to the new executive to ensure continuity and sustained progress.

With Theodore Opara’s succession of leadership coming at a time when Nigeria’s auto industry is grappling with challenges such as high vehicle import costs, rising fuel prices, and the slow pace of electric vehicle adoption, expectations are high. But with a clear mandate, a capable team, and an ambitious roadmap, NAJA’s future under his stewardship looks both promising and pivotal to the next chapter of automotive journalism in the country. Expectations are high among industry observers for Opara and his team to elevate the role of auto journalism and deepen NAJA’s contributions to national development in the mobility sector as the association moves into this new chapter.
