The Nigerian Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency (SMEDAN) has unveiled a strategy to offer financial support to more than one million small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to stimulate economic progress and advancement. This announcement was made at the 2024 National Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Conference in Abuja, where the agency’s Director General, Charles Odii, spoke to participants about SMEDAN’s goals to enhance small business development. Their approach aims to enhance the capabilities of small and medium enterprises by providing financial support and Infrastructure development.
Odii stressed the organisation’s dedication to supporting one million small enterprises, ensuring they obtain the necessary resources for growth and Sustainability in a challenging economic environment. He disclosed that SMEDAN intends to review its achievements in the upcoming year to determine the effectiveness of its efforts in reaching these objectives. Furthermore, the organisation is committed to equipping enterprises with essential resources to thrive, emphasising the importance of infrastructure and skill enhancement. Odii urged small business owners to capitalise on opportunities by forming cooperatives, associations, or clusters.
No repayment will be made for the SMEDAN financial support.
He noted that this strategy facilitates a more efficient allocation of resources and training, enabling SMEs to gain maximum advantage from support programs. He remarked that SMEDAN’s financial assistance is not subject to repayment. He also expressed his optimism that these resources would be utilised wisely to enhance and strengthen the businesses they aim to assist. Odii emphasised the critical role of enhancing skills in the MSME sector, identifying insufficient capacity as a major challenge for small enterprises in the country. In response to this issue, SMEDAN has introduced the SME Digital Academy program to provide entrepreneurs with essential skills to succeed in the modern competitive environment.
Therefore, the institution provides classes that address crucial subjects like launching a venture with minimal funds, developing a business strategy, identifying the appropriate audience, and expanding operations. Odii further emphasised the importance of these classes in enabling entrepreneurs to increase their skills and improve their business knowledge, ultimately contributing to their sustainable success. Another significant aspect of their Empowerment efforts is the #200 billion intervention fund recently announced by President Bola Tinubu to support the MSME sector. Out of this sum, #50 billion is specifically earmarked for one million nano businesses, with each beneficiary set to receive #50,000 in grants.
Leveraging opportunities requires partners via cooperatives and clusters.
However, Odii shared optimism that this financial boost will change the landscape for the smallest businesses, allowing them to expand, generate employment opportunities, and positively affect the overall economy. The message from the Director General to the business sector emphasised the importance of collaboration through cooperatives and clusters to leverage potential opportunities. He stressed that the agency is committed to providing financial assistance to SMEs and facilitating essential infrastructure for their growth. Odii also mentioned upcoming reviews in the next few months, during which SMEDAN will evaluate the advancements achieved and measure the effectiveness of their initiatives in the field.
In other developments, Odii recognised the importance of state governments in this initiative’s effectiveness. He urged state governments, particularly the Delta State Government, to collaborate with SMEDAN to maximise the reach of the empowerment program for small businesses. The partnership between federal and state governments is essential for supporting small enterprises nationwide. Odii emphasised that the growth of a small business positively impacts the whole community, as a single entrepreneur can support multiple individuals. During the program’s flag-off ceremony for the Delta North zone in Asaba, some beneficiaries confirmed receiving alerts for the #50,000 grants.

This immediate disbursement demonstrates their commitment to transparency and efficiency in the program’s implementation. The beneficiaries were selected through a technology-based system that ensured fairness, and subsequent financial support will be contingent on how well these initial grants are utilised. Odii emphasised that SMEDAN supports small enterprises in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. He expressed optimism that this program and continuous training and skills enhancement initiatives would contribute to economic advancement, allowing small businesses to thrive and succeed.
