Saudi-Nigeria trade expands to $600 million

The Trade relationship between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia has seen significant growth, reaching $600 million, underscoring the strengthening ties between the two nations. This achievement was addressed at the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Abuja during the celebration of the Kingdom’s 94th National Day. Notable figures, including government representatives, corporate executives, and leaders from various diplomatic missions, attended the event, highlighting the significance of the relationship. Faisal bin Ebraheem Alghamdi, Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to Nigeria, emphasised the exceptional relationship between the two countries over the last 63 years, centring on commerce, education, and diplomatic relations.

This enduring collaboration has been strengthened by various bilateral agreements that promote shared advantages, such as official visits and the growth of economic and cultural connections. A crucial element in the strengthening ties between the two nations is the large number of Nigerian pilgrims visiting Saudi Arabia. During 2023, more than 65,000 Nigerians undertook the important Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina, and an additional 120,000 made their way to the Kingdom for the smaller pilgrimage, Umrah.

260 students received scholarships to study within the Kingdom.

Their dedication to offering worshippers a comfortable and enjoyable experience has been a defining feature of their connection with the world. Guided by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the nation has prioritised ensuring that every detail of the pilgrimage runs seamlessly and efficiently. Education is another domain where collaboration thrives. They have offered assistance to students in the country through scholarships, enabling 260 students, irrespective of gender, to pursue their studies at universities within the Kingdom.

In addition to trade and education, humanitarian support has been vital in strengthening the relationship between the two countries. The Kingdom has actively contributed to several health initiatives, primarily through the Nur-Saudi Voluntary Project launched by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. This initiative aims to deliver essential medical care, including surgeries and health interventions, to those in need throughout the region.

An impressive milestone was reached with the successful separation of conjoined twins from Kano, representing the 56th operation of its kind performed by Saudi doctors. The Kingdom continues to excel in conducting complex medical procedures, and this accomplishment reinforces its dedication to offering healthcare support to vulnerable communities. The country is vital in the health sector, offering many medical services. The Kingdom has also been involved in various health and humanitarian initiatives to enhance its citizens’ welfare.

Specifically, Kano State has conveyed its appreciation for the Kingdom’s support in healthcare. During the National Day event, Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam represented the state government and reaffirmed its dedication to strengthening ties with Saudi Arabia. Abdussalam emphasised that the state is eager to broaden collaborations with the Kingdom, particularly in the trade, health, and education sectors.
