It's part of the environmental initiatives established by the corps.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has embarked on a monthly environmental Sanitation exercise in Niger State, aimed at promoting a clean and healthy environment for residents. The initiative, flagged off by NYSC Coordinator in Niger State, Mrs. Olayinka Abdulwahab, is a response to the scheme’s findings during the Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) program, which revealed that poor environmental sanitation was the leading cause of illnesses treated. The monthly sanitation exercise, approved by the NYSC Director General, aims to address this challenge and reduce the prevalence of diseases caused by poor hygiene.

As well, the exercise will involve corps members and residents cleaning up public spaces, markets, and other areas, as well as sensitizing the public on the importance of maintaining good hygiene practices. Tree planting is a significant aspect of the corps’ environmental initiatives. The scheme has planted over one million trees across the country, combating Deforestation and promoting environmental conservation. This effort not only beautifies the environment but also helps to reduce carbon Emissions, combat Climate Change, and provide shade and shelter for wildlife. The trees also serve as a natural barrier against soil Erosion and landslides, protecting homes and farmlands.

Initiative has reduced water-borne diseases in residents.

Effective Waste Management is crucial for a clean and healthy environment. The corps has partnered with local governments to establish effective waste management systems, promoting Recycling and proper disposal of waste. This collaboration has led to the establishment of recycling centres, waste sorting facilities, and proper disposal of hazardous waste. The scheme has also engaged residents in proper waste disposal practices, encouraging them to segregate their waste and deposit them in designated areas. Access to clean water is also essential for human survival. The agency has constructed Boreholes and implemented water treatment projects, providing clean water access to rural communities.

This initiative has improved the health and wellbeing of residents, reducing the incidence of water-borne diseases such as Cholera, typhoid, and diarrhea. The scheme has also educated residents on proper water storage and handling practices, reducing the risk of contamination. Public enlightenment campaigns are crucial in promoting Environmental Health, hygiene, and sanitation. The agency has organized public awareness campaigns, reaching over one million people, to educate them on the importance of maintaining good hygiene practices, proper waste disposal, and environmental conservation.

Campaigns have increased awareness on good environmental practices.

These campaigns have led to a significant increase in public awareness and adoption of good environmental practices. The scheme has also collaborated with local schools to incorporate environmental Education into their Curriculum, empowering the next generation to become environmental ambassadors. Mrs. Abdulwahab urged residents to maintain good sanitation and take care of their health, emphasizing that the exercise is ongoing across all local government areas in the state. She expressed appreciation for the Niger State Government’s support and commitment to the welfare of corps members posted to the state.

Also, the government has provided necessary resources and Infrastructure, enabling the scheme to achieve its objectives. This initiative demonstrates NYSC’s commitment to addressing environmental and health challenges in Niger State, aligning with their broader goals of promoting national development and youth Empowerment. By engaging corps members and residents in environmental sanitation, the corps is promoting a Culture of cleanliness and promoting Sustainable Development in the state. The scheme is also providing corps members with valuable skills and experience, empowering them to become change agents in their communities.
