Nigerians are urged to prioritise safety and wellness in their daily routines.

National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) has encouraged its employees and the general public in Nigeria to prioritise safety and wellness in their daily routines. During a press briefing in Abuja, Mr. Cyrus Nkangwung, the Director of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) at NOSDRA, revealed details about the upcoming 2024 Safety Week for employees. April 28, 2024, marks the annual celebration of World Day for Safety and Health at work. The event will focus on “Exploring the Impact of Climate Change on Occupational Safety and Health”.

Nkangwung raised the alarm over how unsafe climate conditions were impacting workers’ efficiency on a global scale. He described how his department’s main focus was to recognise any hazardous environmental conditions within the agency that could harm employees’ health and implement appropriate safety measures. Staff members are being educated on how certain behaviours in homes and offices contribute to climate change’s consequences. They are raising awareness to cultivate a more favourable work environment to prevent negative attitudes.

The agency is committed to employee well-being and safety.

Also, Nkangwung was disappointed by certain employees’ carelessness regarding safety measures. He urged them to stop engaging in harmful behaviours that could jeopardise the agency’s occupational safety and health. He emphasised the importance of prioritising safety and health guidelines outlined by the OSH Department to the staff. The safety and well-being of NOSDRA staff are a top priority, and strict measures are in place to protect them while carrying out their official responsibilities. Due to the agency’s commitment to occupational safety and health, losing a team member in the line of duty is not an option.

The agency promotes safety week events, such as sessions on safe driving practices, defensive driving techniques, and basic first aid training. In addition, NOSDRA is organising a health and fitness walk in Abuja on Saturday and a seminar on fatigue and stress management on April 29. These initiatives demonstrate NOSDRA’s commitment to ensuring the well-being and safety of its employees.

To address climate change in Nigeria, the government, organisations, and individuals must prioritise sustainable practices, promote Renewable Energy sources, and implement effective environmental policies. This includes investing in clean energy solutions like solar and wind power, reducing Greenhouse gas Emissions through stricter regulations and enforcement, and promoting Reforestation and conservation efforts to preserve ecosystems. Education and awareness campaigns on climate change and its impact on occupational health, like the initiatives by NOSDRA, are also essential to promote a culture of environmental responsibility and drive positive change towards a more sustainable future in Nigeria.
