The Nigeria Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA) is set to transform the nation’s healthcare system by leveraging the untapped potential of indigenous medicine. As Nigeria faces significant challenges, including underfunded medical facilities and restricted access to quality healthcare, particularly in rural regions, the agency seeks to integrate natural remedies into the national medical system. With this innovative approach, the NNMDA aims to complement traditional medical practices, addressing critical gaps and reshaping the future of healthcare in the country.
During a recent media conference in Lagos, the organisation’s Director-General, Prof. Martins Emeje, outlined the agency’s strategic initiatives for 2025. Among its key priorities is the development of indigenous treatments for cholera, a persistent public medical challenge in the country. The agency is also leveraging traditional remedies that have been effective in local communities for centuries, enhancing them through rigorous scientific research. Prof. Emeje expressed optimism about these remedies’ potential to impact healthcare nationwide and across Africa.
Indigenous medicine to combat cholera and antimicrobial resistance.
However, drawing on indigenous plants known for their antibacterial properties, the agency has collaborated with traditional healers and modern scientists to create a treatment that meets high efficacy and safety standards. Early clinical trials have shown promising results, and the agency believes this product could play a pivotal role in reducing Cholera outbreaks. In addition to combating cholera, the NNMDA addresses the global threat of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) by developing herbal alternatives to traditional antibiotics. These products, derived from medicinal plants with potent antimicrobial properties, aim to mitigate the overuse of synthetic antibiotics, a major driver of AMR.
This focus addresses a critical medical care challenge and provides accessible solutions for underserved rural areas with limited access to modern healthcare. Also, the agency’s initiatives extend beyond medical practice to economic empowerment. By sourcing raw materials from local farmers and collaborating with traditional healers, the NNMDA promote Sustainable Agricultural practices and stimulates rural economies. These are expected to create jobs, reduce dependency on imported medicines, and empower local entrepreneurs, underscoring their commitment to addressing medical challenges while driving economic development.
Advancing research and international collaboration.
Looking at their 2025 agenda, the NNMDA also focuses on developing antidotes for snakebites, a significant health issue in regions like Gombe State. With international collaborations in the Netherlands and India, the agency aims to create effective herbal treatments for human and Livestock diseases. Prof. Emeje emphasised the importance of securing adequate funding and resources to scale these initiatives rapidly and effectively. In research, the agency is compiling a comprehensive database of Traditional Medicine and conducting a detailed review of the country’s biodiversity to support innovative medical solutions.
It has secured significant research grants, including a four-year grant from the Canadian Institute for Health Research, to advance its work in combating antimicrobial resistance and other critical medical challenges. Furthermore, the agency is strengthening its capacity to develop advanced natural medicine solutions by collaborating with leading professors from the nation’s top universities. Meanwhile, they have successfully employed nanotechnology to create herbal products, enhancing their efficacy and safety. These advancements have gained recognition within the region and attracted international attention.

Reflecting on the achievements of 2024, Prof. Emeje emphasised the agency’s dedication to addressing critical medical challenges with urgency and innovation. Looking ahead, he expressed confidence in the transformative potential of natural medicine to reshape medical practice. With continued support and investment, the NNMDA is poised to make indigenous remedies a mainstream component of the national medical system.
