Analysts have called on Nigeria to strengthen its ties with other African nations by improving its visa processing system. This follows the government’s decision to replace its visa-on-arrival policy with landing and exit cards for visitors, aiming to streamline immigration procedures. Speaking in a Nairametrics discussion, experts argued that Nigeria’s visa policies remain cumbersome and should be modernised in order to facilitate smoother travel, boost investment, and strengthen diplomatic and economic relations across the continent.
One of the key concerns raised was the difficulty Nigerian passport holders face when travelling within Africa. Akinbamidele, a guest analyst, recounted his experience of long immigration delays in countries such as Kenya, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. He noted that despite Nigeria’s efforts to promote regional unity, its citizens often face unnecessary obstacles when travelling within Africa. He shared a personal experience where a Mexican colleague received a visa within three hours, while his own application remained unprocessed for over two years.

Moreover, another analyst, Tunji Andrews, highlighted the disparity in visa processing times between Nigerians and travellers from other countries. He recalled an instance where his visa application was significantly delayed, while another applicant was granted a visa much faster, solely because he held a Nigerian passport. The discussion also pointed to Rwanda’s streamlined visa system, which allows for swift processing and minimal bureaucratic hurdles, offering a model Nigeria could emulate to improve its immigration framework.
Beyond individual travel concerns, analysts noted that Nigeria’s complex visa procedures deter foreign Investment and tourism. The country’s reliance on manual processing, coupled with allegations of unofficial fees requested by immigration officers, discourages businesses and travellers alike. Comparisons were drawn to Rwanda’s digital approach, where visa applications are processed efficiently, and businesses can be set up online within 48 hours. While Andrews argued that Rwanda’s efficiency is more a result of officer conduct than digitisation, Akinbamidele maintained that Technology could significantly reduce human error and processing delays in Nigeria.
