Every citizen should show commitment to the fundamental values of the nation.

Due to its historical importance and its representation of the country’s dreams and unity amid diversity, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has highlighted that the recently reinstated national anthem, “Nigeria We Hail Thee”, resonates more deeply with Nigerians. The organization has urged every citizen to develop a stronger appreciation for the national anthem and various national symbols, encouraging a renewed dedication to fundamental values of the nation, including discipline, integrity, respect for work, and social equity.

Dr. Edward Banigo, the Director of NOA for Bayelsa State, emphasized the necessity of honouring national symbols once again during a press conference held in Yenagoa. This event signified the launch of a national awareness initiative centred on the national anthem and the recently adopted National Values Charter, designed to enhance public civic awareness across the nation. Dr. Banigo stated that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has recently approved the National Values Charter, characterizing it as foundational framework for both citizens and leaders.

Unity within the country’s ethnic and cultural variety will be promoted.

This charter acts as a moral guide, detailing the civic values that will influence the relationship between the populace and the government, thereby improving responsibilities in both leadership and citizenship. He highlighted that this initiative arrives at an essential moment, with Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to foster social harmony and unity within its ethnic and cultural variety. On May 29, 2024, President Bola Tinubu reinstated the national anthem, Nigeria We Hail Thee, marking a revival of an essential aspect of the nation’s identity following independence. Dr. Banigo highlighted that this anthem holds significant meaning for Nigerians due to its historical significance and the Patriotism it inspires.

The National Values Charter consists of two primary aims, one being the encouragement of seven core responsibilities that individuals owe to both their nation and each other. These duties, outlined by the authorities, will act as a fundamental framework for Nigerians, assisting in harmonizing personal behaviours with the objectives of national growth. The second objective emphasizes the seven principles of governance regarding the populace, ensuring a balance between rights and duties in a democracy while strengthening the relationship between citizens and their government.

A sense of patriotism will be revived among the Nigerian population.

Therefore, the organisation tasked with enhancing national symbols and values has launched a nationwide initiative aimed at raising awareness of the National Anthem and the National Values Charter. With this effort, the agency seeks to revive the sense of patriotism within the Nigerian population. It is their responsibility as guardians of national emblems and the foremost organization for social engagement and value realignment to motivate Nigerians to not only uphold the National Anthem but also embody the principles embedded in the National Values Charter.

In a similar discussion, the NOA’s Director General, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, highlighted the importance of embedding these values within institutions. He stated that the National Values Charter will be woven into prominent national organisations like the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), fostering a profound sense of national identity and civic duty among young Nigerians. The initiative by the government to reintroduce Nigeria We Hail Thee, along with the National Values Charter, illustrates a larger push to reaffirm Nigeria’s fundamental values and enhance national cohesion.
