Nigerian Army aids climate action in Taraba

The Taraba State Government and the Nigerian Army’s Taraba State Chapter have joined forces under the Greening Taraba Initiative to tackle climate change. As part of this partnership led by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, the tree-planting event occurred at the 6 Brigade Command permanent site in Jalingo, the state’s capital. The tree-planting event kicked off with speeches delivered by prominent figures. Dr. Tafarki Agbadu, the House Committee on Environment and Climate Change Chairman, and Brigadier General KC Uwa, the Army Commander, spoke on behalf of Governor Agbu Kefas.

They emphasised the significant impact of tree planting on addressing Environmental Degradation and the essential need for solid collaborations between people and military organisations. On her side, Hajiya Aishat Barde, the Commissioner of Environment and Climate Change in Taraba State, emphasised the importance of maintaining ecological balance, preserving biodiversity, and restoring land to effectively address climate change. She expressed gratitude towards Brigadier General Uwa and his team for their assistance, stating that the country aims to decrease its Greenhouse gas Emissions by 20% without conditions and by 47% with help from other countries by 2030, following its commitments in the Paris Agreement.

Furthermore, key figures such as the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) Chairman Jauro Aminu Mafindi, Chairman of Zing Local Government Prince Davoro, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment & Climate Change Aminu Kotolo, the Chief of Army Staff, senior officers of the Nigerian Army, Chairperson of NAWOWA’s Taraba chapter, Acting Project Coordinator of Taraba ACReSAL, and local community members participated in the event. The participants were motivated to participate in planting trees and caring for them as they grow to fully realise the environmental advantages they offer.

Commissioner Barde focused on the dual purpose of this initiative, which includes improving the environment and boosting the local Economy with sustainable methods. He stressed the importance of expanding tree coverage in combating climate change, aligning with worldwide initiatives to tackle this urgent challenge. The government encouraged citizens to embrace sustainable practices, emphasising the coordinated efforts between the military and environmental industries as a united front against climate threats, acknowledged on a global scale. In his closing remarks, Aminu Kotolo emphasised that the tree-planting exercise is a proactive step towards a greener future. Military personnel’s participation demonstrated a shared commitment to addressing the urgent challenges of climate change and environmental degradation.
