Nigeria vows to strengthen ties with U.S.

Under Tinubu's leadership, US-Nigeria ties were prioritised and celebrated.

Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasised Nigeria’s focus on strengthening diplomatic ties with the United States, which aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s foreign policy agenda. Tuggar made this statement at the US 248th Independence anniversary dinner hosted by the US Embassy in Abuja. The minister emphasised the importance of strengthening the longstanding partnership and friendship between the country and the United States through deeper ties. The Tinubu administration sees the signing of the Nigeria-U.S. Binational Cooperation as a key priority in their foreign policy agenda.

Ambassador Janet Olisa, representing Tuggar and serving as the Director of Regions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasised the longstanding and collaborative efforts between the countries that have promoted a strong relationship between the two countries. Ever since gaining independence, these two nations have maintained a vigilant eye on their friendship, connections, and collaboration evolution. The Nigeria-U.S. Binational Cooperation agreement was a significant milestone this year, showcasing the strength and warmth of their diplomatic ties.

Additional agreements were to be developed to enhance their partnership.

The Deputy Secretary of State recently departed the country. According to Tuggar, the newly appointed deputy secretary of state quickly travelled to the country to oversee a successful binational and facilitate a seamless operation. The minister discussed ongoing efforts by the two countries to develop additional agreements and collaborations to enhance their partnership. Studying Security is a key deliverable for Africa, particularly in the country. He mentioned their focus on enhancing their security alliance and expressed gratitude for the ongoing support they are receiving in terms of security cooperation.

Tuggar conveyed the country’s appreciation for the United States’ assistance with its health sector issues. The Ministry of Health greatly appreciates its collaborations in HIV/AIDS programs. He also commended Richard Mills, the incoming ambassador, who expressed excitement for the adventures and good times they will share. This is the essence of true friendship. According to him, Nigerians have a long history of valuing the concept of nationhood. Maintaining their sense of national identity is crucial, and their safety is always a top priority. The minister expressed his good wishes for a successful celebration and invited everyone to join in wishing them a joyful, Happy Independence.

About 700,000 Nigerians live and work in the US.

On his part, Amb. Mills spoke about how both countries prioritise democracy and freedom, proudly upholding their status as federal republics. He mentioned that their belief aligns with the principles stated in the US Declaration of Independence almost two and a half centuries ago. He believes that both Nigerian and American citizens are entitled to life, freedom, and the pursuit of joy. Settling into his new position as the 22nd US Ambassador to Nigeria in Abuja, he eagerly anticipates the opportunity to connect with a wide array of people and collaborate in enhancing the relationship between the two countries.

Also, Ambassador David Greene, the Deputy Head of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires at the US Embassy, also emphasised the dynamic and positive relationship between the country and the United States. He noted the significant presence of 700,000 Nigerians living and working in the US, underscoring the importance of strong interpersonal connections as the bedrock of their bilateral ties. Greene highlighted the valuable contributions of Nigerian immigrants to American society and Economy, illustrating the mutual benefits that stem from the close and enduring relationship between the two nations.

Lastly, the relationship between the countries has always been robust, and efforts are currently being made to further enhance cooperation in various areas for the benefit of both nations. The recent event was attended by a wide range of individuals, including government officials, diplomats, business leaders, politicians, religious figures, journalists, and members of Civil Society. Together, they are working towards ensuring the safety, well-being, and prosperity of the people in the country and Americans, promoting a strong and ensuring partnership between the two countries.
