The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has announced a strategy to create a unique Blockchain known as Nigerium in order to safeguard the nation’s data and enhance national security. The decision was influenced by the realisation that many widely used blockchain technologies, such as Ethereum, are managed by developers from other countries who may not have Nigeria’s best interests in mind. Kashifu Abdullahi, the Director General of NITDA, shared details of the new initiative during a meeting with representatives in Abuja from the University of Hertfordshire Law School.
This innovative project aims to foster collaboration between the private and public sectors in order to advance the development of locally created blockchain technology. After hearing the dialogue, Mr. Abdullahi was convinced that implementing the suggested blockchain technology could greatly enhance the Security of the nation and safeguard the personal information of its citizens. Stressing the need for a locally developed blockchain, he pointed out the advantages of Nigeria having complete ownership and authority over its data and resources.
A local blockchain system will keep its people’s interest.
Furthermore, the concept of creating a local blockchain, called the Nigerium project, was first introduced by a team from the University of Hertfordshire Law School, led by Chanu Kuppuswamy. Chanu emphasised the importance of creating a system tailored specifically for Nigeria, highlighting the technology’s ability to adapt to meet the country’s unique requirements and ensure compliance with local laws. He cautioned against the dangers of depending on foreign technology, citing a recent incident with Ethereum in which significant changes were made without input from users, causing potential risks.
She observed that Nigeria’s ability to make significant decisions regarding the blockchain would be compromised if the country were to implement a foreign system. They also proposed the establishment of a Data embassy in Nigeria. This innovative concept involves hosting a server in a foreign country to ensure the country’s data remains secure and uninterrupted in the face of cyber-attacks, natural disasters, and other risks. Furthermore, the delegation recommended that Nigeria explore the integration of the technology throughout government agencies to encourage seamless cooperation and connectivity.
Research centres will be set up across the six geo-political zones.
NITDA and various government agencies and Private Sector organisations are working together on the Nigerium project to safeguard Nigeria’s Data Sovereignty and enhance national security. This collaborative effort will have a significant impact on the country’s digital assets. NITDA has also revealed intentions to set up research centres in each of the country’s six geo-political zones dedicated to AI, Blockchain and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Throughout history, Nigeria has consistently stood out as a frontrunner in driving technological advancements across Africa, with a dynamic tech environment that spans various start-ups and an increasing number of technology hubs. The push for the growth of the Nigerian tech industry is in harmony with the overarching national agenda to promote homegrown technological solutions and lessen reliance on abroad technologies. The goal is to create a self-sustaining Digital Infrastructure that will help propel the country towards becoming a dominant player in Africa’s digital economy.

Apart from the technological and security advantages, the Nigerium project prioritises Education as well as skill development. The NITDA initiative to create research hubs in each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical regions reflects this dedication. These hubs will be dedicated to promoting Innovation and growth in emerging areas. Nigeria aims to cultivate homegrown talent and stimulate creativity in order to build a strong environment that will fuel ongoing progress in technology and economic development. In essence, the Nigerium initiative goes beyond technology and showcases Nigeria’s determination to shape its digital future.
