Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández has issued an apology for singing a song with Argentina teammates that contained racist and homophobic slurs about the French national team. The incident was captured in a video posted on Fernández’s Instagram, showing the team celebrating their Copa América final victory against Colombia. The video sparked backlash on social media, with fans and French players condemning the behaviour as racist. He said, “I want to sincerely apologize for a video posted on my Instagram during the national team celebrations. The song includes highly offensive language, and there is no excuse for these words. I stand against discrimination in all forms.” Chelsea, who signed Fernández from Benfica for a British record £106.8m in January 2023, has initiated an internal disciplinary procedure, and he is expected to be fined and sent on a racism Education course.
