Check out stories on Gündoğan, Facundo Pellistri, Gallagher, Vardy and Erikson.

Manchester City is interested in re-signing İlkay Gündoğan after one year.

In a surprising transfer development, Manchester City are reportedly interested in re-signing Ilkay Gündoğan from Barcelona just a year after he left the Etihad Stadium on a free transfer. Gündoğan, who spent seven successful years at City and became one of the club’s all-time greats, is now on Pep Guardiola’s radar again as the team looks to bolster their midfield following Kalvin Phillips’ Loan move to Ipswich Town. Despite being a key player for Barcelona last season, Gündoğan’s position is under threat after the arrival of Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig. While Barcelona coach, Hansi Flick is keen to keep the 33-year-old, the club’s management is open to his departure if a suitable offer comes in. Gündogan has two years remaining on his current contract with the Catalan giants.

Facundo Pellistri set to make a permanent move to Panathinaikos.

Manchester United have reached an agreement for Uruguayan winger Facundo Pellistri to join Greek club Panathinaikos in a deal valued at around £5.1 million. Pellistri, who was signed from Penarol during the extended 2020 transfer window, has spent much of his time on loan at Alaves and Granada in Spain. With Erik ten Hag having plenty of options in Pellistri’s position—such as Marcus Rashford, Amad Diallo, and Alejandro Garnacho—the 21-year-old’s playing time was limited, making a move the best option for all involved. Pellistri will reunite with Uruguayan coach Alexander Medina, whom he worked with at Granada, and will play under compatriot Diego Alonso in Greece. Although he was selected for the 2022 World Cup, Pellistri’s United career never fully took off, with just one Premier League start in the 2023/24 season. United have included a sell-on clause in the deal.

Atlético Madrid and Chelsea finally reach a Gallagher-Felix agreement.

Chelsea are on the verge of signing João Felix from Atlético Madrid in a deal worth £40 million, with the Portuguese forward set to sign a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with an option for an additional year. This transfer is expected to pave the way for Conor Gallagher to make his long-awaited move to Atlético. Gallagher’s transfer had been in limbo after a £34.5 million deal for Samu Omorodion to move in the opposite direction fell through last weekend. However, with Chelsea and Atletico reaching an agreement for Felix, Gallagher’s switch to the Spanish club now seems imminent. Atletico’s pursuit of Gallagher has been dependent on raising funds after they spent £81 million to acquire Argentine striker, Julián Álvarez from Manchester City. Gallagher’s move to Spain now appears to be on track, with all parties nearing a resolution.

Jamie Vardy scores as Leicester City draws Tottenham on Monday evening.

Premier League veteran, Jamie Vardy proved he still has a knack for scoring in the Premier League, as the 37-year-old striker salvaged a point for Leicester in their return to the top flight with a 1-1 draw against Tottenham on Monday. Despite Tottenham dominating the first half and creating numerous chances, they failed to extend their lead after new signing Dominic Solanke missed several opportunities. It was Spanish defender Pedro Porro who gave Tottenham the lead in the 29th minute, heading in James Maddison’s cross at the far post. Vardy, who hadn’t featured in Leicester’s pre-season games and was initially expected to miss the opener due to injury concerns, stepped up when needed. After an injury to Patson Daka, Vardy headed in Abdul Fatawu’s cross 12 minutes into the second half, equalizing with Leicester’s first significant chance. Vardy’s goal marks his ninth in 17 Premier League appearances against Tottenham.

Christian Erikson to leave Manchester United before the transfer deadline.

Manchester United have reportedly informed Christian Eriksen that he is free to leave before the transfer window closes, as the club looks to raise funds for a deal to sign Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain. Eriksen, who joined United in 2022, has played a supporting role during his time at the club, with his highest number of Premier League appearances in a season being 28. Last season, injuries limited the 32-year-old midfielder to just 22 league games, suggesting his playing time could further diminish. United have been focused on strengthening their midfield throughout the summer, and financial constraints have made it necessary to sell players to afford Ugarte. Reports indicate that Eriksen has been offered to Ajax, with United asking for at least £5 million for the Danish international, who could make a return to the Eredivisie giants.
