The Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Hon. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, has called for teachers to play a more proactive role in improving Education quality within the state. During an inspection tour of schools in the Agidingbi, Ikeja area of the state, the commissioner urged educators to expand their contributions beyond regular lesson delivery by researching and collaborating to maximise student outcomes. He emphasised that teachers should deliver lessons, inspire students, and hold them accountable for their academic responsibilities.
During the inspection, Hon. Alli-Balogun expressed concern over the declining performance of students, particularly in the West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE). He criticised practices like mass promotion and the extortion of students for grades, emphasising that these issues undermine educational progress despite the state’s Investment in prompt salary payments and other staff benefits. The commissioner further stressed the need for regular assessments, such as weekly tests, to identify students requiring additional academic support.
Need for proper utilisation of academic funds and educator’s roles.
Furthermore, the commissioner addressed the importance of financial accountability in secondary schools, pointing out the misuse of the ₦250,000 monthly grant allocated for minor repairs and operational needs. He clarified that the grant should be utilised effectively to ensure schools function correctly. Principals and tutor-generals were reminded of their duty to oversee the proper use of these funds. Their accountability was a primary focus, with Alli-Balogun warning against continuing unethical practices like demanding money for grades.
He clarified that any educator caught engaging in such activities would be dismissed. He called for stronger collaboration between teachers and parents, emphasising that parents should actively monitor their children’s progress at home and review their schoolwork regularly. To further support student success, the commissioner announced initiatives such as early morning lessons, after-school programs, and Saturday sessions. These additional learning opportunities aim to provide students with the tools necessary for academic improvement. The Ministry of Education has also established monitoring teams to ensure the effective implementation of these programs.
Strategies for motivating educators and their critical role.
Meanwhile, Alli-Balogun noted the significance of technical education and Vocational Training as essential components of the state’s educational framework. While existing technical colleges in Lagos are currently oversubscribed, the commissioner revealed plans to expand Infrastructure and teaching staff to accommodate the increasing demand. He reiterated the state’s commitment to equipping students with academic knowledge and practical skills essential for the modern workforce. Looking at their roles, teachers play a pivotal role in shaping the educational landscape and influencing the lives of their students. Their responsibilities extend beyond the classroom as they serve as mentors, counsellors, role models, and even external parents.
Effective teaching involves content delivery and the ability to inspire, guide, and positively impact students’ lives. The societal importance of teachers cannot be overstated. They prepare children for future leadership roles by instilling purpose and inspiring academic and personal success. They are fundamental to society’s growth as they nurture the next generation of responsible citizens and professionals. Given the significance of teachers, it is essential to keep them motivated and engaged. Effective strategies include offering praise and recognition for exceptional performance, being available to address concerns, and creating reward programs that celebrate achievements.

On the other hand, encouraging collaboration, uplifting educator ideas, and listening to feedback can promote a positive working environment. Providing them with sufficient time to manage their workloads, identifying periods of high stress, and empowering their strengths are additional ways to support them. These strategies should be implemented in Lagos and across the country to achieve better academic outcomes.
