In an effort to enhance Nigeria’s digital landscape and address gender disparities in technology, the Korean government has reiterated its dedication to supporting young Nigerian girls through ICT programs. This partnership was underscored at the finals of the National Girls in ICT competition in Abuja, showcasing the significant impact of Technology on society. Led by Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, this program aims to inspire young girls’ passion for technology and provide them with the necessary skills and self-assurance to excel in the ICT field.
It also acts as a venue for Secondary School girls to present their innovative ideas and creativity in tech, promoting an environment of inclusivity and opportunity. Kim Pankyu, the Korean Ambassador to Nigeria, was represented by Son Sunggil, the Country Director of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Nigeria. He emphasised Korea’s commitment to empowering young girls in the technology sector. KOICA’s engagement in this initiative demonstrates their resolve to promote Innovation and technological progress among youth. This partnership reflects the Korean government’s strong dedication to the nation’s advancement in digital technology.
Participants were praised for their efforts and remarkable dedication.
KOICA’s enduring relationship with local organisations has facilitated projects that resonate with the nation’s revitalised vision for a more inclusive and tech-savvy community. Speaking to the competition’s participants, the representative praised their commitment and resilience, emphasising that their experiences, regardless of results, would be life-changing. The event also showcased students and teachers from KOICA-backed smart schools in the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Cross River, Ekiti, Kano, and Bauchi. These institutions have received advanced ICT equipment from KOICA, promoting better access to academic tools and cultivating a technology-driven learning environment.
Mrs. Maryam Gwadabe, the Special Adviser to the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy and the Project Lead for the initiative, emphasised the primary aim of bridging the digital gender gap. She underscored the importance of motivating young girls to pursue careers in ICT and use their talents to tackle issues within their communities. With support from various technical and logistical partners, her dedication facilitated involvement from every one of the region’s six geopolitical zones. The competition saw vibrant participation from secondary schools nationwide, with Kano State as the overall winner.
Students had the chance to express their excitement during the event.
Fatima Nazir, a Sweet Haven High School student in Kano, voiced her excitement about the victory and shared her aspirations to expand the innovative app developed by her team. She called on her peers to remain confident and resilient, urging them to embrace opportunities and strive for technological greatness. Also, Usie Emmamuzou, the Country Director of PLAN International, emphasised how essential STEM Education is for promoting modern innovation through Victoria Chenge. He expressed concern regarding girls’ minimal involvement in ICT studies and professions and urged increased Investment in STEM education to bridge these gaps.
As part of its dedication to promoting inclusivity, PLAN International awarded laptops and Raspberry Pi devices to the champions of the competition. The collaboration between the two countries presents notable opportunities for socio-economic advancement. This program elevates young women’s career chances and strengthens their agency by providing them with technological expertise. Such Empowerment may contribute to a diverse workforce within the technology industry, driving creativity, business development, and overall economic progress. Furthermore, integrating Digital Literacy within the Educational System through KOICA-backed smart schools represents a crucial advancement in the fight against Poverty and inequality.
