The Kano State government, under the leadership of Governor Abba Yusuf, has recently hosted the Ambassador of the Republic of Tunisia to Nigeria, Mohsen Antit, alongside a high-powered delegation comprising government officials and business leaders. The visit coincided with the ongoing Tunisia-Nigeria Multi-sectoral Economic Forum and aimed to deepen collaboration in critical sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, culture, and trade. The state’s engagement in the forum underscores its strategic position as a leading commercial hub in sub-Saharan Africa and highlights its commitment to fostering mutually beneficial partnerships with international stakeholders.
During the meeting at the Government House, Governor Yusuf emphasised the immense potential for bilateral trade, particularly in agriculture, where both regions possess significant Investment opportunities. He also revealed plans for collaboration in garment production, dairy processing, and dyeing industries, leveraging both region’s expertise and resources to drive economic growth. To facilitate these interactions, the governor directed the state’s Ministry of Investment, Commerce, and Industries and the Ministry of Agriculture to organise an exhibition showcasing the state’s economic strengths to the foreign delegation.

However, Governor Yusuf further noted the pivotal role of the state Dry Port in enhancing international business. He stressed that local businesses are preparing to import goods from Tunisia through this facility, a move expected to boost cross-border commerce. With its strategic location and capacity to streamline logistics, the dry port is poised to become a central hub for Trade activities between the two regions. On the other hand, this development will reduce transportation costs and time and improve customs procedures, making it easier for businesses to operate efficiently.
Looking at the importance of the port, the dry port’s potential to facilitate trade is further amplified by its ability to attract investments and create job opportunities in the surrounding areas. However, challenges such as Infrastructure constraints and the need for efficient customs clearance processes must be addressed to harness its capabilities thoroughly. Despite these hurdles, the port presents a unique opportunity to position the state as a central regional trade hub, fostering economic activity and strengthening ties with foreign investors.

In response, Ambassador Mohsen Antit commended the state’s economic potential and expressed gratitude for the warm reception accorded to his delegation. He reaffirmed their commitment to building long-term partnerships with Kano, particularly in areas of mutual interest such as agriculture, infrastructure, and cultural exchange. The ambassador also acknowledged the hospitality extended to 17 entrepreneurs in the state who recently visited Tunisia for business engagements, signalling a reciprocal commitment to fostering a conducive environment for Investors from both regions.
To solidify this partnership, Governor Yusuf has instructed the Managing Director of the Kano State Investment Promotion Agency (KAN-INVEST) to accompany the ambassador on a tour of key economic sites across the state. This aims to provide the investors with firsthand insights into the state investment landscape and highlight the region’s competitive advantages. Meanwhile, by facilitating such interactions, the region seeks to attract foreign investments to drive Economic Growth and create job opportunities for its residents.
