On January 23, 2025, the “Jollof and Tea Discussion Panel” was organised by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) through its Office of International Relations, Partnerships, and Prospects (IRPP). This event, which had as its theme Leveraging UK-Nigeria Educational Partnerships for Economic Growth, sought to investigate the ways in which cross-border educational partnerships might foster economic development. Notable speakers on the panel were Aseosa Sharon Uwagboe of the British High Commission, Daniel Emenahor of the British Council, Professor Ayodele V. Atsenuwa, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, and the Honourable Toki Mabogunje. Participating enthusiastically and asking thoughtful questions were staff members and students from different colleges.
As careers advance, Professor Atsenuwa stressed the importance of generalist knowledge, flexibility, and lifelong learning. Through introspection and volunteer work, even without compensation, the Honourable Mabogunje promoted personal development. Daniel Emenahor emphasised the need to strike a balance between experience, exposure to a variety of chances, and ongoing progress. For both professional and personal success, Aseosa Sharon Uwagboe emphasised the need of communication and networking abilities. In his discussion of Nigeria’s and the UK’s longstanding educational relations, British Deputy High Commissioner Jonny Baxter highlighted international educational exchanges and the influence of artificial intelligence on Education in the future.

Nigerian students can pursue academic endeavours in the UK with the help of several esteemed scholarships. Chevening Scholarships: Chevening provides completely financed one-year master’s degrees at a number of UK universities, and it is funded by the UK government. Recipients have access to top-notch instruction, unique networking opportunities, and cultural experience in the UK. 32 Nigerians received Chevening Scholarships in 2024. Scholarships from the Commonwealth: These scholarships fund master’s and doctoral studies in the UK and are targeted at students from Commonwealth nations. 50 Nigerians were awarded Commonwealth Scholarships in 2024, demonstrating the UK’s dedication to the advancement of education in Nigeria.
The “Jollof and Tea” phrase is the intermingling of British-Nigerian cultures.
More so, the British Council offers the GREAT Scholarships, which cover up to £10,000 in tuition costs for a variety of taught postgraduate courses that last one year. Nigerian students have greater access to UK education thanks to the participation of several UK universities in this scheme. The expression “Jollof and Tea” represents the intermingling of British and Nigerian cultures. While tea is representative of British history, Jollof rice, a popular West African delicacy, is symbolic of Nigerian heritage. Putting these components together shows how the two cultures have blended harmoniously, highlighting respect for one another and common experiences.
Through its celebration of diversity and cooperation, this metaphor demonstrates the richness of cross-border partnerships. Attendees expressed their excitement over such projects. One UNILAG senior said, “Participating in conversations such as these expands our perspectives and provides access to global opportunities.” Another person said, “Learning about these scholarships motivates me to pursue further studies abroad and bring back valuable knowledge to Nigeria.” The websites of the individual scholarships offer comprehensive information for anyone who are interested in studying in the United Kingdom.
