India, Nigeria Expand Trade and Defence Ties

Both nations stressed alliances in terrorism, maritime safety and intelligence.

Nigeria and India have strengthened their longstanding relationship by reaffirming a strong partnership across the economic, defence, healthcare, and Food Security sectors. This renewed commitment was announced during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Nigeria, which was arranged at the request of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Prime Minister Modi, who was received at the Aso Villa, engaged in extensive bilateral discussions with President Tinubu. Both leaders underscored the importance of collaboration in counterterrorism, maritime safety, and intelligence sharing to address common challenges such as piracy and terrorism.

Recognising the increasing dangers in the Gulf of Guinea and the Indian Ocean, they agreed on collaborative measures comprising regular naval exercises and joint anti-piracy operations to protect critical maritime routes. The foreign country reiterated its support for the nation’s defence modernisation efforts, emphasising its role as a reliable defence equipment supplier. However, Nigeria welcomed the contributions of over 200 Indian companies operating within the country, which have created notable employment opportunities and promoted Investment growth. Both nations pledged to finalise pending agreements, including the Economic Cooperation Agreement, Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement, and Bilateral Investment Treaty, to enhance Trade relations.

Enhancing trade relations and promoting agriculture for food security.

As the region’s largest trading partner, they have played a key role in the nation’s economic development. During President Tinubu’s 2023 visit to the country, both Tinubu and Prime Minister Modi acknowledged the agreements’ importance, with their Investors pledging more than $14 billion towards sectors such as industrialisation, energy, telecommunications, and defence. Work continues to accelerate the outstanding investments for the benefit of both nations. The leaders discussed partnerships in energy, emphasising long-term agreements for the supply of crude oil and LNG. India promised technical assistance in securing pipelines, converting to compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and distributing LPG.

Additionally, Infrastructure enhancement was a key topic, with the nation vowing to provide favourable credit lines and technical knowledge to support the local developmental goals. Agriculture and food security, essential for both nations with large populations, became mutual focus areas. They provided Nigeria with rice support during a critical period and consented to enhance collaboration in various agricultural sectors, including machinery, high-yield seed varieties, and technical knowledge. Both nations committed to working together on millet cultivation, with India acknowledging the region’s endorsement of the UN’s designation of 2023 as the International Year of Millets.

Advancing healthcare, education, and promoting renewable energy solutions.

In healthcare, both sides agreed to strengthen collaboration through medical and diagnostic centre development and innovative health management systems. India proposed its CoWIN digital platform to transform vaccination efforts and health data organisation in the country. Moreover, India is dedicated to providing cost-effective generic medications and improving the availability of quality drugs for the local population. Discussions also emphasised Education and cultural exchanges. The scholarship initiatives from the country, particularly the e-VBAB virtual learning program, were recognised as vital instruments for developing local human resources. Both leaders underscored the necessity of expanding educational opportunities for students and nurturing connections among people.

Also, travel and tourism were recognised as pivotal for enhancing cultural exchange and mutual understanding. Leveraging the connections between the two countries, they committed to encouraging travel and cultural engagement. The Prime Minister acknowledged the importance of the communities of both nations as crucial connectors for reinforcing their bilateral relationships. Conversations also covered topics related to climate initiatives and renewable energy. As participants in the International Solar Alliance, the two countries pledged to enhance collaboration on developing solar parks and increasing the adoption of renewable energy. Additionally, Nigeria expressed interest in the region’s offer to join the Global Biofuel Alliance and the Global River Cities Alliance.

During international forums, the two leaders expressed their dedication to reforming the UN Security Council, promoting fair representation and solidarity for permanent and non-permanent membership. Nigeria’s acknowledgement as a BRICS partner and its involvement as a guest nation in the G20 were hailed as notable achievements in enhancing its global presence. To acknowledge India’s role in advancing the region’s progress, President Tinubu awarded Prime Minister Modi the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON). Modi attributed this honour to the 1.4 billion people of his country, conveying optimism for enhanced partnership between the countries. The meeting ended with both leaders reiterating their common goals for development and wealth.
