With rising concerns about children’s decreasing reading habits, an initiative called “Book the Kids Again” will begin next month in Nigeria. This campaign aims to reignite the passion for reading among Secondary School students. Mr. Goodluck Hayi, the Chairman of 0410 Consults Limited, led this effort to enhance the reading experience for young students, especially in private schools. The initiative, set to take place on October 4, 2024, will bring together 60 learners from different private schools throughout Abuja.
Mr. Hayi emphasised the importance of nurturing a generation of young readers who will enjoy literature and enhance their critical thinking abilities and skills to interpret and analyse complex texts. He believes this program will promote a stimulating atmosphere for students to discover the world through literature, equipping them with resources that enhance their cognitive advancement and individual development. Although the project’s intentions were commendable, Hayi voiced his frustration regarding excluding public schools during the initiative’s initial stage. He pointed out that administrative hurdles prevented them from broadening the campaign’s influence to include students from public schools.
Administrative challenges kept the initiative from reaching all schools.
He attributed this obstacle to the challenges faced in partnering with governmental organisations. Still, he believed collaborating with private schools would lead to a seamless experience, ensuring that resources directly reach the students and that the project’s effects are noticeable. At the upcoming event, participants will engage in various activities to improve their literary skills and enjoyment of book exploration. The goal is to motivate students to explore texts more deeply and encourage a consistent literary practice, cultivating a contemplative and analytical approach to literature.
Also, the initiative’s organisers hope these students will become book enthusiasts and agents of change within their communities, inspiring others through their newfound passion for literary engagement. The project’s long-term goal is to showcase how literature can change lives and how initiatives driven by private entities can enhance the nation’s current educational landscape. By concentrating on private schools, the organisers aim to establish the program as a prototype that may shape educational regulations and motivate broader changes. The strategy is to start from the community level, highlighting the concrete advantages of fostering a robust literary environment and its role in enhancing youth’s cognitive and emotional development.
Educational experts recognise the crucial role of reading in learning.
Otuya Okecha, the CEO of Fibresol Nigeria Limited, emphasised the crucial impact of literary immersion on his personal and career development. He shared insights on how engaging with books has broadened his thinking, improved his reasoning skills, and fostered a strategy-based mindset. Okecha emphasises that literature is a beacon of hope and motivation for him, influencing his perspective and enhancing his critical thinking ability. He stressed the need for parental leadership, encouraging parents to cultivate their book-learning habits to motivate their children to follow.
Okecha emphasises that the program aims to initiate a chain reaction in which children understand the significance of literature in educational settings and observe it being embraced in their households and communities. When parents demonstrate effective book exploration habits, they contribute to the idea that texts open doors to enlightenment, creativity, and self-improvement. One of the team members, Martha Kama, emphasised the advantages of book reading, especially for the youth. She pointed out that books serve as reservoirs of information and influential instruments that can mold children’s ambitions and dreams.

In her view, engaging with written content can help children develop the self-assurance and drive necessary to imagine a more promising future for themselves and their communities. The reading initiative is a beacon of hope in an era where digital distractions often overshadow traditional literary habits. Focusing on the next generation, the program seeks to reignite a love for book interaction and foster a Culture where literature again holds a central place in children’s lives. Through the efforts of the organiser and their team, the campaign aspires to bring a conversation about the importance of literary immersion, not just for academic success but also for personal growth and societal transformation.
