The federal government of Nigeria has unveiled plans to establish blood collection centres in all 774 local government areas, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to address the chronic blood shortages that threaten lives during medical emergencies. The initiative, led by the National Blood Service Agency (NBSA), aims to ensure the availability of blood for transfusions, a critical resource in saving lives, particularly during accidents, surgeries, and childbirth complications. In a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, Abdullahi Haruna, who leads Media and Publicity at NBSA, unveiled the new initiative.
He noted that this project is an important advancement in addressing the gap in vital supply and demonstrates the government’s dedication to enhancing healthcare services throughout the country. Central to this initiative is the creation of Donation centres in every local government area. This comprehensive approach aims to enhance the accessibility of life-saving fluid donation services for Nigerians and promote a consistent essential fluid resource for healthcare needs. By distributing donation operations throughout the community and setting up these centres locally, the government hopes to motivate more people to contribute life-giving resources, ultimately increasing the overall vital supply.
These facilities aim to ease the burden on the national healthcare system.
Prof. Saleh Yuguda, the Director-General of the NBSA, emphasised the critical need to tackle shortages, highlighting that insufficient life-saving fluid poses significant challenges in emergency medical care. He mentioned that the organisation is trying to guarantee that no citizens lose their lives due to inadequate transfusion fluid availability in urgent circumstances. The creation of these facilities aims to reduce the pressure on the national healthcare system. This initiative will be crucial for improving access to life-giving resources, thereby playing a key role in preserving lives during critical medical situations, particularly traffic accidents, maternal and child health complications, and surgical interventions that need essential fluid transfusions.
Also, the NBSA’s strategy aims to enhance the availability of life-saving fluid and encourage consistent public participation in donations. Although many citizens recognise the significance of donating, voluntary contributions continue to be a shortfall. This effort seeks to close that gap by establishing additional convenient and accessible locations for donations. In order to enhance the initiative, the NBSA has joined forces with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to create a comprehensive transfusion fluid bank at NSCDC’s healthcare centre. This collaboration addresses deficiencies and assists additional security organisations requiring urgent resources.
Local govt donations will be increased through the new initiative.
Furthermore, the NBSA states that this partnership is vital in the comprehensive initiative to maintain a dependable life-saving fluid supply across the country. The NBSA’s Director-General emphasised that this initiative reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare results for the citizens. He expressed confidence that creating donation centres in every local government will increase the contribution rates, ensuring a constant and adequate essential fluid supply for emergencies and regular medical care. With the project’s implementation, the FCT will act as the foundation for introducing new donation centres.
Meanwhile, these locations will be chosen carefully to guarantee convenient access for potential donors, enhancing involvement. Additionally, the effort will be supported by campaigns to raise awareness about the significance of consistent donations. In his remarks, Emeka Okeke, the Deputy Commandant of NSCDC, emphasised the initiative’s importance, especially in combating severe shortages. He pointed out that having blood readily available in emergencies can be the crucial factor that distinguishes life from death and that this initiative will be essential for preserving lives across the country.

As a result, the initiative to establish donation centres in each local government area transforms service delivery nationwide. By distributing these facilities and making donations more accessible, the government facilitates citizen involvement in a vital cause that can save many lives. With the support of institutions like the NSCDC and other healthcare stakeholders, this project is a crucial milestone in the journey towards a more robust and responsive healthcare system. As the government remains committed to addressing the country’s healthcare challenges, Nigerians are urged to embrace the initiative and contribute to saving lives through regular donations.
