The federal government has restored Mining activities in Zamfara State, ending the restriction that has been taking place since 2019, which was introduced to address the escalating Insecurity within the state. This announcement was made by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, during a press briefing in Abuja. However, solid improvements have been observed following comprehensive monitoring and evaluations of the Security situation. Dr. Alake noted that the enhanced security system, marked by the successful neutralisation of key bandit leaders through coordinated efforts, has created a conducive environment for the resumption of mining activities.
Zamfara State is widely acknowledged for its abundant lithium, gold, and copper deposits. The minister emphasised the potential of these resources to stimulate Economic Development both within the state and across the country. While the initial restriction was essential to reduce insecurity and protect national resources, its unintended consequence was the creation of a vacuum exploited by illegal miners. With the ban lifted, the government aims to ensure that mining operations are effectively regulated and the full economic potential of the state’s resources is realised.
Resuming mining activities in a resource-rich state.
Meanwhile, Zamfara’s vast Mineral wealth, including high-value resources like gold and lithium, positions the state as a critical player in the country’s mining sector. As a result, the federal government is looking forward to revitalising economic activities and promoting regional growth through this new development. The resumption of formal mineral activities is expected to create thousands of jobs, stimulate local economies, and improve the living standards of communities in the state. These opportunities will extend beyond Zamfara, as the ripple effects of Economic Growth could enhance the broader national economy.
Moreover, the government’s decision prioritises the formalisation of mineral resources operations. This approach ensures that the revenues generated are channeled into the national treasury and provides a robust framework to combat illegal mining. The government aims to prevent the Environmental Degradation and economic losses associated with illicit operations by regulating extraction activities. On the other hand, formal oversight will promote safer, more sustainable practices that protect the environment and the well-being of local communities in the state.
A focus on global partnerships and capacity building.
Addressing recent concerns regarding a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Nigeria and France, Dr. Alake clarified the agreement’s objectives. He assured that the MoU strictly focuses on trade, training, and capacity-building initiatives to equip the sector professionals with advanced skills. Moreover, technical and financial support from France will help strengthen the sector without compromising control over its natural resources. Dr. Alake called on the media to play an active role in dispelling Misinformation about government policies. By accurately informing the public, the media can promote understanding and ensure that citizens fully understand the significance of the government initiatives.
Furthermore, the resumption of these activities in the state is anticipated to strengthen the country’s position within the global mining industry. With future reforms, the Investment environment is expected to become more attractive, encouraging local and international Investors to participate. By leveraging mineral resources, the Economy could be diverted from oil Revenue dependence, aligning with broader Economic Diversification goals. The sector’s reformation could be a cornerstone for achieving sustainable and inclusive development nationwide because the potential financial benefits from revitalised mining activities are substantial.

Looking ahead, the sector ministry has hinted at a series of policy initiatives to consolidate reforms within the industry. These efforts are expected to enhance regulatory structures, improve transparency, and create an enabling environment for sustainable development. As these policies take shape, they will further strengthen the industry and ensure that the wealth generated is equitably distributed for the benefit of all citizens. As mining operations resume, the state’s communities can look forward to new opportunities that improve livelihoods and stimulate development.
