Nigeria’s quest to achieve energy sufficiency has received a new boost as the federal government, in partnership with the FGN Power Company (FGNPC), recently signed a $118 billion contract to construct and renovate 2,670 kilometres of 33kV, 11kV, and 400V distribution lines nationwide. With the support of this extensive project, the power distribution Infrastructure in Nigeria will be improved, resulting in a more reliable Power Supply to support the country’s economic development. Chief Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, stated during the signing that the project is intended to supplement current mid-stream transmission projects in order to ensure power delivery to residential, commercial, and industrial areas across the country.
The FGN Power Company hopes to greatly improve millions of Nigerians’ access to reliable energy by modernizing the distribution network. The Minister was excited by the collaboration, stating that the initiative is a major step towards providing sustainable and reliable power to all Nigerians. This project, in collaboration with Elsewedy Electric and Power China, seeks to to fill in deficits in infrastructure. During his speech, Mr. Kenny Anuwe, the Managing Director of FGN Power Company, highlighted that the company was thrilled to collaborate with Elsewedy and Power China on this groundbreaking initiative.
FGNPC operates in accordance with industry standards.
Anuwe sees both firms as the perfect partners to deliver this vital infrastructure because of their proven competence and dedication to quality. Working together with Elsewedy Electric can guarantee the best possible quality and efficiency while supplying the required infrastructure, he added. With this project, 1,983 kilometres of current distribution lines will be renovated and 687 kilometres of new distribution lines (greenfield) will be built. To create a thorough project description that complies with legal criteria and industry standards, FGNPC has collaborated extensively with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the Enugu and Benin Distribution Companies (DisCos), and operate in accordance with industry standards.
Previous administration, under the leadership of president Muhammadu Buhari, founded the FGN Power Company in 2018 as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to implement the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) in collaboration with Siemens. Recently, President Bola Tinubu has appointed a new FGN Power Company management team to further bolster efforts to modernize and extend Nigeria’s national grid. Under this administration, the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) is anticipated to greatly enhance the availability of electricity and generate a large number of jobs in the industry.
Efforts to achieve energy sufficiency have advanced.
Earlier in July, the prestigious China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) Group paid the FGN Power Company a courtesy visit. This important visit serves as an expression of the continued dedication to promoting Innovation and growth in Nigeria’s power industry. In line with the more general goals of Economic Growth and development, the visit represents a critical turning point in the ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s power industry. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to promoting technical innovation and infrastructural development to meet the nation’s increasing energy demands,
Together, FGNPC and CMEC are resolute in their commitment to advancing sustainable economic growth and enabling Nigeria’s future. Additionally, the commission of the Ajah Mobile Substation by FGN Power Company represents a significant achievement in Nigeria’s power sector rejuvenation for the first phase of the PPI. The 63MVA, 132/33kV Mobile Substation is essential for improving gearbox wheeling capacity and enabling prompt deployment. Nigeria’s efforts to achieve energy sufficiency have advanced with the commissioning of five projects under the Presidential Power Initiative.

With these commissioned projects, gearbox wheeling capacity will be increased by 272 megawatts in order to provide a more reliable supply of power to consumers across the country. To further ensure proper implementation of the numerous ongoing projects, the Minister of Power has established the Ministerial Power Sector Working Group. Directors and agencies under the Ministry’s administration also sign performance contracts in order to guarantee efficient project tracking and management. The working group would function more as a support for centralized project management and sector cooperation.
