In an effort to reshape the Technology sector in Nigeria, the Nigerian government, teaming up with Google Africa, has unveiled a substantial AI fund amounting to ₦100 million. This announcement, which took place in Lagos, signifies progress in Nigeria’s ambition to excel in the field of artificial intelligence development. The National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) will manage the fund in accordance with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision to utilize technology to foster national development.
Recently, Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, announced on X that they have officially initiated the ₦100 million Artificial Intelligence Fund in partnership with Google Africa to assist Nigerian startups that utilize AI in creating inventive solutions. The initiative, aimed at equipping startups to create innovative AI solutions, presents a distinctive chance for Nigerian entrepreneurs. Nonetheless, various stakeholders are wary, labelling the effort as a mere drop in the ocean considering the vast requirements of the tech landscape. Yet, the Nigerian government is hopeful that this fund will catalyze technological progress, especially in AI, potentially tackling urgent local issues and bolstering economic development.
Nigerian startups will grow their innovations and reach global markets.
Furthermore, Google’s participation in this project underscores its dedication to advancing the digital landscape in Africa. Olumide Balogun, the Director for West Africa at Google, pointed out that this collaboration represents a significant advancement in the company’s mission to create solutions tailored for Africa and stimulate innovative growth. Beyond funding, the chosen startups will benefit from Google’s AI resources, professional guidance, and a worldwide network of investors. These tools will enable Nigerian startups to grow their innovations and reach international markets.
To qualify for the fund, startups need to be located in Nigeria, include at least one founder from Nigeria, and concentrate on AI-powered solutions that exhibit significant market viability. Applications will be accepted from September 10 through September 25, 2024, and the results will be disclosed in October. Tijani asserts that the government’s initiative in developing AI regulations will create lasting effects on both public and private industries, guaranteeing that the advantages of AI extend throughout the whole economy.
Regulations and AI conducive environment will be provided.
In addition to this initiative, Nigeria’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, released in August 2024, seeks to enhance the development of AI across multiple industries. This plan is anticipated to shape upcoming regulations and establish an environment conducive to AI advancement. The launch of the AI fund follows the unveiling of the 8th cohort of Google for Startups Accelerator Africa, announced on July 31, 2024. This initiative unites ten startups from various African nations, such as Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, and Uganda. Chosen from almost 1,000 submissions, these startups showcase the vibrant talent arising in Africa’s technology industry.
Utilizing Google’s assets, these businesses are addressing some of the continent’s urgent issues while promoting employment growth and enhancing quality of life.
