Google commits to Nigeria’s digital future

Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be leveraged for digital evolution.

To foster economic advancement and progress, Google is making considerable efforts to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a catalyst for Nigeria’s digital evolution. Acknowledging AI’s capability to tackle various social and economic issues, Google is focusing its strategy on AI and cloud computing in Nigeria. In a recent engagement, Matt Brittin, who serves as Google’s President for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), underscored the firm’s dedication to the technological development in Nigeria. He pointed out Google’s emphasis on enhancing connectivity, improving digital literacy, and supporting local businesses.

They are excited to contribute to Nigeria’s digital evolution. Nonetheless, it is the local entrepreneurs, charities, and institutions that are really at the forefront. They are addressing intricate issues using Technology and fostering significant transformation. Brittin’s trip was immersive, featuring discussions with startups such as Farmspeak, Towntalk, and BetaLife, which are utilising AI to tackle regional challenges in areas like healthcare and agriculture. Accompanied by Alex Okosi, Google’s Nigerian-born Head of Africa, Brittin explored ways Google’s AI resources could support the growth of these enterprises.

Hands-on skills in AI, cybersecurity, and others will be provided.

This involvement underscored Google’s approach to fostering local talent, viewing Nigeria as a promising centre for AI innovation. To nurture local talent, Google has launched a variety of educational programs. The Google Career Certificates provide Nigerians with hands-on skills in fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital marketing, and coding languages. Furthermore, the Hustle Academy initiative emphasises AI training tailored for small and medium-sized businesses in Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa. Google demonstrates its dedication through significant financial support. The organisation has unveiled a $5.8 million Investment aimed at enhancing foundational AI and cybersecurity Education throughout Africa.

In Nigeria, Data Science Nigeria is set to receive $1.5 million, which is intended to equip unemployed and Vulnerable Populations with skills. Additionally, a collaboration with Raspberry Pi seeks to foster AI knowledge among youth in Nigeria and Kenya, focusing on nurturing the next generation of technology pioneers. During Brittin’s visit, it was revealed that Google.org is donating ₦2.8 billion ($3.6 million) to the Data Science Network Foundation. This initiative aims to enhance the skills of thousands of Nigerians, with plans to train 25,000 teachers who will, in turn, instruct 125,000 youth in artificial intelligence.

Significant funds have been provided for digital developments.

Additionally, employees in the Public Sector will receive focused training at the Government AI Campus, helping them acquire advanced knowledge in AI and data science. His schedule featured discussions with President Bola Tinubu and Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister for Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, highlighting Google’s continuous collaboration with Nigeria. They assessed the achievements of projects such as the ₦1.2 billion ($1.6 million) digital skills initiative introduced in 2023. This initiative is designed to enhance individual capabilities, foster innovation, and shape a more technologically advanced future for Nigeria.

Google’s dedication to inclusivity is reflected in its latest enhancement of Voice Search and talk-to-type features, which now include 15 African languages, featuring Nigerian languages such as Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, and Nigerian Pidgin. This initiative aims to improve access to technology for millions of Nigerians, promoting inclusivity in the Digital Age and ensuring everyone can participate in the technological transformation. At the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR), Google revealed financial support for ten startups in Nigeria, with each startup being awarded a sum of ₦10 million ($13,000).

In addition to this funding, these startups will benefit from Google’s AI resources, guidance, and Cloud credits, promoting advancements in sectors such as healthcare, finance, and agriculture. While reflecting on his trip to Nigeria, Brittin shared his respect for the nation’s vibrant entrepreneurial culture. They take pride in supporting entrepreneurs’ endeavours and are eager to witness the benefits they will bring to Nigeria and further afield. By continually investing in skills enhancement, Infrastructure growth, and local innovation, Google significantly contributes to Nigeria’s digital evolution.
