In an effort to aid those in need financially, the Ruth Titilayo Educational Foundation has launched its scholarship program for Secondary School pupils in Nigeria. The scholarships are offered to students enrolled in secondary schools, polytechnics, postsecondary institutions (both undergraduate and graduate), and vocational schools. A minimum GPA of 4.0 must be maintained, applicants must be under 25 years old, and outstanding academic performance on entrance examinations or at their current institution are requirements for eligibility.
Financial aid is provided via the scholarship, up to ₦100,000 for tuition and ₦15,000 for living expenses per academic year. By October 31, 2024, online applications must be submitted. Shortlisted candidates will be notified in November, and interviews will take place in December. The fund is dedicated to helping with postsecondary and vocational education, among other degrees of education. Blessing Akinwale, a secondary school student from Lagos, is one of the distinguished beneficiaries of the Ruth Titilayo Educational Foundation scholarship.

As someone from a low-income family, Blessing was able to concentrate on her Education without having to worry about money after performing well on her Common Entrance examinations and winning the scholarship. Her enrolment in the University of Lagos to study Medicine now is evidence of the foundation’s dedication to assisting students in realising their potential. Blessing believes that the scholarship significantly altered her life’s course by giving her mentorship and motivation to follow her aspirations in addition to financial assistance.
Chibuzor Okafor, an Enugu-based vocational trainee and another beneficiary, utilised the scholarship to pay for his polytechnic study. He finished his mechanical engineering training with the foundation’s help, and he currently owns and operates his own vehicle repair shop with three other technicians. His narrative reflects the foundation’s overarching objective of enabling young people to pursue diverse educational and career pathways. Academically gifted but financially struggling students benefit from it.
A significant program that provides scholarships to students in postsecondary institutions in Nigeria and elsewhere is the Federal Government Scholarship Scheme. More than 3,500 students benefited from this program in 2022, and success rates were estimated to be over 75%. Many of the recipients went on to get degrees in disciplines including engineering, medicine, and the sciences. Academically gifted but financially struggling students benefit from the grant, which pays for living expenses as well as tuition.
Another well-known initiative is the MTN Foundation Scholarship, which awards ₦200,000 annually to undergraduate students specialising in STEM disciplines. More than 4,000 Nigerian students have received scholarships from the MTN Foundation since its founding in 2006. Approximately 85% of beneficiaries, according to the foundation, graduated with distinctions or first-class honours, advancing science and Technology in the nation. Similarly, since its founding, hundreds of students have benefited from the Shell Nigeria University Scholarship, which focusses on students from the Niger Delta.

Shell gave more than 400 scholarships to students studying geology, engineering, and environmental science in 2023. It’s one of the most successful corporate scholarship programs in Nigeria, with reports indicating that roughly 70% of beneficiaries finished their degrees and found jobs within a year of graduating. All of these initiatives help Nigerian students, particularly those from underprivileged families, have better access to education and are essential in creating qualified graduates who can support the country’s labour market.
