Nigeria’s Federal Government is implementing strong measures by forming a collaborative military command to address ongoing Insecurity in the northwest region. The new Security system, named “Operation Fansan Yamma,” is designed to address the increase in banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, and other related criminal activities that have affected the region for years. Mohammed Badaru, the Minister of Defence, revealed these plans during a visit to Governor Uba Sani at the Kaduna Government House. While visiting the region, Badaru emphasised the importance of setting up a Command and Control Centre in the northwest as essential for tackling security challenges.
This plan supports President Bola Tinubu’s approach to adopting creative strategies to address insecurity across the country. The military leadership will prioritise collaboration among different Security Agencies and neighbouring countries, especially the Niger Republic, to tackle transnational terrorism, arms smuggling, and criminal operations that have worsened unrest in the region. Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State acknowledged the federal government’s dedication to tackling the various insecurity challenges in the northwest region. He praised the introduction of Operation Fansan Yamma, asserting that it will eliminate criminal activities while promoting a safer environment that encourages Investment and stimulates economic development.
Operation Safe Haven is proposed to be moved to the 1st Division, Kaduna.
Sani proposed that Operation Safe Haven, which currently manages security in Plateau State and southern Kaduna, be moved to the 1st Division in Kaduna. He believes this transition from the 3rd Division in Jos would enhance operational effectiveness. Mohammed Badaru emphasised the collaborative aspect of this new system, pointing out that it would require close cooperation with the security forces and governments of neighbouring countries, such as the Niger Republic. Due to the area’s closeness to Niger, the transit of arms, terrorists, and ammunition has emerged as a serious issue.
Badaru emphasised the importance of taking the initiative to strengthen the border areas, especially around Sokoto, a region that has faced attack risks. The government’s discussions with Niger Republic officials, along with the involvement of Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, are aimed at reinforcing cooperation to tackle these shared security threats. As part of its ongoing efforts to ensure stability, the federal government has sent high-ranking officials, such as the Minister of State for Defence, to important locations in the northwest to evaluate conditions and collect practical advice.
