In a significant push toward Innovation and inclusivity, the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), has unveiled plans to integrate Digital Literacy into the national Education system. In partnership with the Ministry of Education, this initiative marks a milestone in equipping students with the critical skills needed to thrive in the rapidly evolving global economy. The program was announced during a visit by Kashifu Inuwa, NITDA’s Director General, to the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa. Both leaders and the team members emphasised the importance of digital Literacy as a cornerstone for development.
The initiative aims to embed digital skills at every educational level, from early learning to tertiary institutions, with 70% achievement in the near term and the hope of reaching 95% by 2030. Nigeria faces a significant digital divide, characterised by unequal access to Information and Communications Technology (ICT). Factors such as the high cost of digital equipment, inadequate ICT skills, lack of electrical infrastructure, and income disparities have limited access to the tools and resources necessary for participation in the digital economy.
Limited access to technology affects students’ ability to learn.
This divide has far-reaching impact, particularly in education, where limited access to technology hampers students’ ability to learn, innovate, and compete. ICT has the potential to transform sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, banking, and defense, yet these benefits remain out of reach for many due to systemic challenges. The collaboration between NITDA and the Ministry of Education is a strategic effort to close this gap. The program will integrate comprehensive digital literacy curricula into Nigeria’s education system.
Also, this initiative will provide students with the tools needed to access, analyse, and utilise information effectively, fostering creativity and problem-solving skills critical for future success. Efforts to bridge the digital divide in Nigeria are not new. Over the years, partnerships with global tech leaders such as Google, Microsoft, and Intel have contributed to capacity building in ICT. Local technology hubs have also played a pivotal role in promoting digital skills. These collaborations have laid the groundwork for more inclusive policies, such as using libraries as e-learning centres and introducing social Security measures to enhance ICT access.
An inclusive and innovative Nigeria will be built.
Integrating digital literacy into education is more than just a policy; it is a vision for a more inclusive and innovative Nigeria. By empowering students with digital skills, the government is preparing them to lead and innovate in a technology-driven world. This initiative also positions Nigeria as a potential leader in the African digital economy, promoting a workforce that can adapt to and drive technological advancements. As the nation strives to meet its literacy targets by 2030, this collaboration underscores the government’s commitment to reducing inequalities and creating opportunities for all.
Furthermore, the program is not just about bridging the digital divide but also about laying the foundation for sustained economic growth, innovation, and global competitiveness. Through bold strategies and sustained efforts, Nigeria is poised to transform its educational framework, ensuring that future generations are not just participants in the Digital Economy but leaders shaping its course. The integration of digital literacy into education is a decisive step toward a brighter, more inclusive future for the nation.

By promoting a digitally competent teaching workforce, the initiative ensures that the learning experience is both engaging and impactful. This approach enhances teaching methodologies and creates an environment where students can actively participate in the digital age, fostering a Culture of innovation and continuous learning.
